The Tenshō Iga War (1579–1581) comprised the two invasions of Iga by Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period.[1][2] First initiated on 6 October 1579[3][4] as a poorly-enacted campaign under Nobunaga's second son Nobukatsu,[5] his army fell into an ambush set by shinobi from the autonomous Iga ikki and was routed.[6]
Furious that his son had foolishly left the job half-done, allowing it to become a larger problem when the emboldened Igans rallied allies, Nobunaga resolved to crush the resistance and personally took command of the army.[7] He met with much greater success when he returned on 30 September 1581 with his new retainer Yasuke,[3] razing down settlements across the province and all but destroying Iga.[3][8] In a twist of fate, one of the surviving ninja, Fujibayashi Naoe,[9] later joined forces with Yasuke to pursue the common goal of hunting their mutual enemy, the Shinbakufu.[10]
