Tatsugoro (died 1582) was a Japanese samurai of the Oda clan during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In the 1570s, Tatsugoro served as an overseer under Oda Nobunaga and saw one of his workers, Gennojo, steal his katana. In response, he traveled to meet Gennojo's parents, killed them, and placed their heads on pikes to serve as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience. For further punishment, he forced Gennojo to work on building Nobunaga's castle, leading the young man on a path to rebel against daimyō rule and corruption.[1][2]

In 1582, Tatsugoro was stationed at Nijō Castle in Kyoto and caught sight of Gennojo and his associate, the Iga shinobi and Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe, near a statue of Kannon. Overhearing Gennojo's interpretation of his parents' demise, Tatsugoro interrupted and revealed the true reason his parents had been killed, while claiming that Kannon had cursed Gennojo's parents with a child like him.[2]

Although Gennojo wanted to fight him, Naoe told him to leave as she faced the samurai herself. Tatsugoro then called for reinforcements and fought against Naoe, but he and his men were ultimately defeated and killed. However, Tatsugoro's remarks led Gennojo to doubt himself, and he committed suicide while blowing up the castle's rice storage not long after.[2]
