They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me Makuwauri no Bakemono.

This article is about a subject that lacks an official name and is known only by its nickname, title, or alias.

"Makuwauri no Bakemono" was the name imposed on a Japanese farmer who lived at Suika Lands in Izumi Settsu during the late Sengoku period. He regularly debated and sparred with another local farmer in disagreement over whose favorite melon was better. Together, their actions led many people to purport that a yōkai known as the Makuwauri no Bakemono (真桑瓜の化物, lit. 'oriental melon warrior') existed in the region.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

The people of Izumi Settsu heard the commotion and fighting noises from this "melon" yōkai presiding in the Suika Lands. This led them to meet with the monk-turned-demon hunter Mamushi to tell him about their testimonies. The monk believed these sightings of "bakemonos" to be fabrications, but reluctantly agreed to investigate the claims.[1]

In 1582, Mamushi spoke with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and tasked them to investigate various yōkai claims. During their investigation in Settsu, Naoe and Yasuke arrived at the farm and saw both melon "yōkai" sparring aggressively with each other. Confronting the men, they were asked about which melon they preferred. Answering the question, they soon fought the opposing farmer and bested them. This resulted in a new "melon lord" for the season before Naoe and Yasuke left and debunked the claim.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Regardless of the choice, either farmer will duel the player if they choose suika or makuwauri as their favored melon.[1]
