Sato Genta (佐藤 源太; died 1582) was a Japanese samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1582, Sato Genta secretly worked under Akechi Mitsuhide to sabotage Oda Nobunaga's defenses at Honnō-ji when Mitsuhide and his forces came to attack. As a result of Nobunaga's death, Genta was promised a promotion for his part, but was denied the promotion and reluctantly accepted a lower rank within Toyotomi Hideyoshi's army.[1]

After the incident at Honnō-ji, Hori Hidemasa, one of Hideyoshi's samurai and a former Oda clan retainer, met with the Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke, another former Oda retainer. Telling him about the traitors responsible for Nobunaga's death, Hidemasa convinced Yasuke to help him avenge their lord.[1]

From Hidemasa's intel, Yasuke and fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe discovered Genta's presence within Azuchi. Confronting him, they promptly assassinated Genta and retrieved the katana Sorrowful Surrender from his personal effects.[1]
