Sato Genta (died 1582) was a Japanese samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1582, Sato Genta secretly worked under Akechi Mitsuhide to sabotage Nobunaga's defenses at Honnō-ji when Mitsuhide and his forces came to attack. As a result of Oda Nobunaga's death, Genta was promised a promotion for his part. However, he was denied his rank and accepted a lower rank and placement with Toyotomi Hideyoshi's army.[1]

After the incident at Honnō-ji, Hori Hidemasa, a current retainer to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, met with Kakushiba ikki member and former retainer Yasuke to discuss these traitors. Yasuke, along with fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe, agreed to help hunt down these betrayers.[1]

From Hidemasa's intel, Naoe and Yasuke discovered Genta's presence within Azuchi. Confronting him, they promptly assassinated Genta and retrieved the katana Sorrowful Surrender from his personal effects.[1]
