Bessho Nagaharu

Bessho Nagaharu (別所 長治, 1558 – 1580) was a Japanese daimyō of the Bessho clan who controlled Harima Province during the late 16th century.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Originally an ally of Oda Nobunaga, Nagaharu betrayed him[2] in 1578 and allied with Hatano Hideharu when Nobunaga called for his retainers and allies to help attack the Mōri clan. Nagaharu had made the choice after hearing that Hashiba Hideyoshi, who was from a lower-ranking background, was leading the troops.[3] Additional resentment in Harima provided a boost to Nagaharu, who then took a stand in Miki Castle.[4]
In spring, Hideyoshi was sent by Nobunaga to attack Miki Castle, beginning a siege to take over the surrounding forts and cut off supply routes to the castle. Despite a new supply route briefly opening in winter before being cut off, the food supplies in Miki were completely depleted by early 1580. As a result, Nagaharu, along with his wife and younger brother, surrendered and committed seppuku on the condition that the castle soldiers be spared,[4] a deal which Hideyoshi accepted. After his death, Nagaharu's head was cut off and taken by Hideyoshi to Azuchi Castle, where it was presented to Nobunaga in the autumn of 1581.[2]
