The Village Yamabushi was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Leading his eight fellow soldiers, he masqueraded as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Following the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi. Their mission was to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who had survived the war. However, these soldiers became more abusive and murderous, killing any civilians in their path. After some time of receiving reports from his fellow warriors, the Village Yamabushi grew remorseful and forwent his mission by following a different oath through meditation.[1]
In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku spoke with Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these false monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by hunting down the imposters. Following Genpaku's lead, they investigated the Mibuno Vale in Iga and found the yamabushi meditating at the Shinobi Training Ground. While there, they also discovered past messages between his fellow soldiers, and found that his armor had been discarded for some time. Looking at the meditating soldier, they ascertained that he had realized his wrongdoings, and decided to spare his life.[1]
