The Forest Yamabushi was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight other soldiers, he posed as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

After the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga commissioned a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi. Their mission was to find and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who had survived the war. However, within a year, the soldiers became lost and violent, killing any innocents in their way.[1]

In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku spoke with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke, who agreed to help him hunt down these false monks. Following Genpaku's lead, they investigated the Wakanoura Bay in Kii and found a yamabushi pleading for help, surrounded by blood. Searching the area, they were ambushed by bandits led by the Forest Yamabushi, who feigned distress to trap them. Ultimately, they killed the bandits and the imposter and retrieved the naginata Izanami's Salvation from the imposter's personal effects.[1]
