Ermigo (died 1582), also known as The Scholar, was a Portuguese translator and a member of the Portuguese and Japanese Rites of the Templar Order during the late 16th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Serving the Templars[edit | edit source]

When he arrived in Japan, Ermigo found a fellow Portuguese stray, Rufino, and built a close friendship with him after Rufino was left on his own.[1] Unbeknownst to Rufino, Ermigo was part of the Templar Order, working with local Templar leader Gaspar to expand the Order's reach. Thus, Ermigo had Rufino gather information about influential locals within the provinces of Izumi Settsu, Yamashiro, and Ōmi.[2]

With this information, Ermigo commissioned a group of hired killers to murder these civilian targets, so the Templars could replace them with their own allies. However, Rufino figured out the Templars' plan, escaped from them, and learned that the information he had collected was on a ship near Sakai. Nevertheless, Ermigo continued on with Gaspar's plan to eliminate their chosen targets.[1]

However, the Kakushiba ikki members Yasuke and Fujibayashi Naoe learned about the killers' plans after meeting with Rufino at their homestead, which was owned by his old friend Tomiko. Traveling to and boarding the ship near Sakai, they destroyed the intel and even assassinated one of the hired killers. However, they learned that some of the contracts had already been sent out, leading Naoe and Yasuke to track down the killers who had received said contracts.[1]

Death[edit | edit source]

After assassinating all of the killers, Naoe and Yasuke shared their findings with Rufino, who deciphered the location of Ermigo at Kashiwabara Fortress. However, Rufino gave Naoe and Yasuke a false location at Okinoshiroishi and went to the fortress himself.[3] There, he confronted Ermigo about using him to further the Templars' plans of murdering innocents. Ermigo tried to defend his actions, claiming they had been in service of the greater good, but was stopped by the arrival of a furious Yasuke and Naoe.[2]

The former argued with Rufino about his lie, to which the latter insisted that he only sought to protect Ermigo, who had been there for him when he had no one. He claimed that Yasuke's anger towards the Templars prevented him from thinking rationally, but the samurai argued that the Templars exploited and killed people for their own gain and were thus undeserving of mercy.[2]

At that moment, Gaspar left the fortress' tower, blamed Ermigo for leading their enemies here, and ordered his men to kill them all, starting with Rufino. When one of the guards fired a shot at Rufino, Ermigo stepped in front of him and took the bullet instead. Falling down bleeding, he was held by his friend while Naoe threw a smoke bomb to cover them all.[2]

After Naoe, Yasuke, and Rufino killed Gaspar and his men, Rufino comforted the dying Ermigo, who lamented that his friend could not see the truth of the Templar cause before succumbing to his injury. As Rufino mourned his death, Yasuke admitted that Ermigo had been a true and loyal friend to Rufino in spite of his Templar affiliations. He and Naoe then offered Rufino a place within their league, which the latter accepted.[2]
