"If I am caught in this lie, I'll be barred from all trade. You have wasted our mon on these forgeries."
―Yakichi to Asajiro after the latter had forged trade contracts in Nobunaga's name, 1582.[src]-[m]

Yakichi was a Japanese gunsmith who lived and operated in Sakai during the 16th century alongside his brother Asajiro.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Naoe: "I don't want to hurt either of you, but I will have those letters."
Yakichi: "You can have them. They're not worth our lives."
—Yakichi gives in to Naoe's demands, 1582.[src]-[m]

In 1582, Yakichi's brother use his mon to acquire forged trading contracts, thirty bars of silver for the Portuguese Brotherhood of AssassinsPortuguese of Nagasaki" and "a shipment of Tanegashima teppo" for Oda Nobunaga, seeking to present them to Imai Sokun and his father Sokyu, who were at at the top of the Sakai's ruling class. He had hoped that contracts would open up their pathway to success and be a stepping stone to gaining higher status. Yakichi, however, expressed doubt as Sokun knows him personally and would find it hard to believe he had the ability to acquire these contracts. In turn, Asajiro argued that they would succeed as one of the contracts bears the seal of Nobunaga.[1]

The two brothers' dispute was overheard by the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, who asked that they hand over the contracts. Yakichi, treasuring his life, offered the letter to her for free. However, Asajiro demanded that she pay five hundred mon for the contracts. Naoe refused and threatened them, causing the two brothers to split up and run away. While Yakichi was spared, his brother Asajiro did not share the same fate, as he had the contracts with him and was hunted by Naoe.[1]
