Philippe Rose with Napoleon at the Siege of Toulon

The Siege of Toulon was a military conflict from 29 August to 19 December 1793 that took place during the French Revolutionary Wars.

History[edit | edit source]

During the French Revolution, the city of Toulon was under the control of the Royalists supported by Anglo-Spanish forces. The Republican troops had to take Toulon, as the city had a key naval arsenal and was the base for about a third of French Navy ships.[1]

Captain Philippe Rose, a former arms dealer and now soldier, partnered with Napoleon Bonaparte during the siege, determining the locations of all nearby artillery and aiding with their requisition to complete the siege.[2] In the process, Rose terrorized the garrisons to both secure their artillery and turn a profit for himself.[3] Having captured the fortifications above the harbor, the Republicans forced the city to capitulate and the Anglo-Spanish fleet to withdraw.[1]

Napoleon's participation in the siege and his mastery of artillery gained him the admiration of Augustin Robespierre, who appointed him brigadier general and put him in command of the artillery of France's Army of Italy.[4]
