The Aekuni Shrine Town, or simply Iga,[1] is a former town and later city in present-day Mie Prefecture, Japan.[2] During the Sengoku period, the town was the heart of Iga Province and was known for the Aekuni Shrine, which served as the province's ichinomiya.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In the 16th century, the Iga ikki used the town as the place where they would organize assemblies to renew their vows to their league and initiate new members, as was the case of Fujibayashi Naoe's induction in 1581.[3] The town also saw battle during the Tenshō Iga War, when Oda Nobunaga's army invaded Iga. Momochi Sandayu led several Igan shinobi to defend the town and managed to repel the Oda troops with the assistance of Naoe and her father, Fujibayashi Nagato.[4]

Greeting Sandayu, Nagato handed him a letter he had received from Hattori Hanzō,[3] which revealed the Shinbakufu's plans to steal the Imperial Regalia's Jewel hidden by Nagato. As Sandayu had been unaware of Tsuyu entrusting the Jewel to Nagato,[5] he angrily destroyed the letter and told Nagato that their oath to Tsuyu had died with her. However, he had a change of heart after taking a look at Naoe and understood Nagato's choice to prioritize the Jewel and his daughter's safety over that of Iga.[4]

After Sandayu explained his plan to meet Oda Nobunaga's army at Mibuno Castle, where they would hopefully be able to withstand the invasion, Nagato offered to accompany him, stating that he would not abandon Iga in its time of need. He then handed his Hidden Blade to Naoe and instructed her to head to the Mihata Kofun, where he had hidden the Jewel, before they parted ways.[4]

In 1582, Naoe and her newfound ally, the samurai Yasuke, returned to the town following Iga's conquest by the Oda clan and established a kakurega for their league, the Kakushiba ikki.[1]
