Sato Katsubei (佐藤 勝兵衛; died 1582) was a Japanese samurai and retainer who served under Oda Nobunaga.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1582, one of Akechi Mitsuhide's representatives bribed Katsubei to sit out of the attack on Oda Nobunaga at Honnō-ji. Taking the bribe, he claimed an injury and stood aside on the night of Nobunaga's death.[1]
Sometime after the incident, the former Oda clan retainer Hori Hidemasa met with fellow retainer and Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke to tell him about the traitors responsible for Nobunaga's death. Agreeing to help avenge their former lord, Yasuke began hunting down the traitors alongside fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe.[1]
Following Hidemasa's intel, Naoe and Yasuke traveled to Yamazaki Castle and found Katsubei residing within the northeastern section. Confronting him, they promptly killed Katsubei and retrieved the teppō Roaring Infamy and the bribery letter from his personal effects.[1]
