Tetsuo was a Japanese youth who lived in Izumi Settsu during the 16th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Tetsuo was an orphan who lost his parents at a young age and was taken in by Yaya and her husband. The couple helped to raise Tetsuo in Osaka and taught him everything that he needed to know to survive, including on the spiritual side, resulting in Tetsuo and Yaya forming a sibling-like bond. When her husband died, Yaya, in her grief, left Tetsuo and joined the Hongan-ji,[1] becoming a monk and member of the Ikkō-ikki that fought against Oda Nobunaga.[2] Having lost Yaya as his guiding figure, Tetsuo soon turned astray and resorted to committing crimes such as stealing to cope and survive.[1]
In 1582, Tetsuo joined a group of monks-turned-shrine raiders, who stole from the Temple of Osaka near the Fishermen's District. While the other raiders focused on valuables and relics, Tetsuo raided Yaya's own quarters within the temple and stole a kanzashi belonging to her late husband. When the raiders failed to find anything valuable, Tetsuo and the group headed north to steal from the Church of Takatsuki. Meanwhile, Tetsuo's act of theft was discovered by Yaya, who asked her associate Fujibayashi Naoe to look for him.[1]
Tetsuo was found by Naoe in the church and, believing that the kunoichi had been sent to kill him, ran for his life, with Naoe giving chase. Tetsuo fled to the entrance of the town and was stopped by Yaya, who angrily chastised him for stealing her husband's kanzashi. Tetsuo in turn rebuked her, claiming that he had lost his way because she had left him all alone. Ultimately, Yaya was persuaded by Naoe to forgive Tetsuo, since it was her own principle that forgiveness was the only balanced path. In turn, Tetsuo accepted Yaya's apology and forgave his "big sister".[1]
