Rokkaku Katsuhime (六角 勝姫) was a Japanese markswoman and a member of the Kakushiba ikki.[1] The only daughter of Ōmi Province's former daimyō Shōtei, she accompanied him in his battles against Oda Nobunaga, his exile in Kōga, as well as the defense of Ishiyama Hongan-ji in Osaka alongside the Ikkō-ikki.[2] Following Akechi Kagemitsu's defeat at Sakamoto Castle, Katsuhime was assisted in various tasks by Fujibayashi Naoe and eventually joined her organization.[1]
Skills and equipment[edit | edit source]
Trained in the Kōga-ryū (甲賀流) ways of ninjutsu, Katsuhime was extremely proficient in kayakujutsu (火薬術, lit. "the art of gunpowder"), particularly with its applications in hōjutsu (砲術, "the art of gunnery"); as a young woman, she was already an expert shot with the foreign teppō.[2]
As a Kōgan shinobi, she and others viewed their rivalry with practitioners of the Iga-ryū (伊賀流, "the Iga school") ways as a serious matter,[2] especially with Nobunaga having hired Kōgans as scouts before initiating the Tenshō Iga War.[3] Unlike some of her peers,[2] Katsuhime took a more jesting outlook on the feud by playfully prodding the Igan Naoe about their schooling differences, something that Naoe reciprocated by jokingly stating that Igans still were better because they "make a better udon noodle soup".[4]
