Nakamura Tadashige was a Japanese military commander and a former retainer of the Bessho clan who lived in the Harima Province during the late Sengoku period. After the death of Bessho Nagaharu, he led the monks and survivors of Tanjosan Myoyoji Temple away towards Kyokaiji Temple and left the Bessho clan.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1578, Oda Nobunaga attacked Harima and led waste on Tanjosan Myoyoji Temple, where many of his fellow monks were massacred. After the Oda forces left, Nakamura Tadashige and his followers found few survivors, including an elderly woman and her grandson, who saw an excruiating amount of death. Within the next two years, after Bessho Nagaharu conceded to Nobunaga and paid with his life, Tadashige followed suit and even left the Bessho clan in response.[1]

In 1582, Tadashige and the former monks of Tanjosan were captured and brought back to Tanjosan by his former fellow retainer Bessho Harumasa, who was secretly part of the secret collective, the Shinbakufu. While he vouched for the monks to be set free, Harumasa offered the choice of fighting for him or dying as his enemy. Guarded by Harumasa's men, Tadashige and his fellow monks were later rescued by the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke. In a private meeting, Tadashige conferred with the pair about their plans. While he asked about their intentions, he reluctantly aided their cause with information while admitting he has no fight left in him.[1]

While Naoe and Yasuke planned for an attack on Miki Castle,[2][3][4], they consulted with Tadashige for the final steps. While he continued to state on how he can no longer fight, he offered refuge to all of those who opposed Harumasa's cause, including the rōnin Koshiro. Fortunately, Naoe and Yasuke overwhelmed Harumasa's forces and ultimately killed him, ending his cause.[5]
