Ōtsu (大津市, Ōtsu-shi) is a city and the capital of Shiga Prefecture, Japan, located south of Lake Biwa.[1] Formerly part of Omi Province during the Sengoku period, the city was split into two districts: Upper Otsu and Lower Otsu.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

In late June 1582, Yasuke, a former retainer to Oda Nobunaga, traveled to Ōtsu to meet with a contact of Lady Nene for more information on the Shinbakufu. The contact, a shrine maiden named Aoi, informed Yasuke of an upcoming duel scheduled to take place on Seta Bridge in the east, where one of the duelists was a rumored Shinbakufu member. She then directed him to the bridge, where he would be able to find out more information about the duel.[3]

Sometime later, Yasuke and his fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe traveled to Ōtsu to assassinate the town's corrupt daikan, Isshiki Mansaku, on the orders of Lady Oichi's bodyguard Kuma.[4]

Yasuke and Naoe also visited Ōtsu on the invitation of the Jesuit priest Luís Fróis to witness the baptism of Lady Satoko. However, while in the city, the pair learned about a planned attack against Fróis and his entourage and decided to protect the group as it departed Ōtsu after the baptism.[5]
