Assault on Armagh

The Assault on Armagh took place in 882 in the early years of High King Flann Sinna's reign over Ireland. It was fought between the High King's Southern Army and Abbot Eogan mac Cartaigh's forces who had gathered in Armagh, a city in the Kingdom of Ulster.

The Assault on Armagh[edit | edit source]

After the High King's ally Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan found evidence proving that Abbot Eogan mac Cartaigh had founded the zealous Children of Danu cult,[1] she reported back to Flann Sinna and her cousin-once-removed, King Sichfrith of Dublin. Putting together the Abbot's hand in a foiled assassination attempt at Flann's coronation[2] and his betrayal that led to the death of Eivor's cousin and Sichfrith's father, King Bárid mac Ímair,[3] Flann prepared an assault on Armagh alongside Sichfrith and Eivor. Supported by Sichfrith's Norse-Gaelic Vikings and Eivor, Flann attacked Armagh's fortress.[4]

The High King's forces broke the fort's defenses and defeated the soldiers while Flann and Eivor entered the fortress' barricaded church and confronted Abbot Eogan. Although the Abbot tried to curse them for the treason against the Catholic church, Flann stated they knew of Eogan's true allegiance. At this, Eogan ended his façade and tried to sow doubt in Flann of his poetess Ciara ingen Medba's loyalty, but Eivor advised the king to ignore his words given his betrayal. Flann and Eivor fought Eogan, ultimately killing him and his guards.[4]

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

While all of Ireland soon learned of Abbot Eogan's treachery,[4] Flann held a council meeting of kings at King's Land in the town of Durrow to discuss the situation regarding the druids. They all agreed to put any druids through an inquisition and have them either convert to Christianity or face exile, much to Ciara's anger. Feeling betrayed, she went to activate the Lia Fáil, but not before Flann and Eivor came to convince her not to do so. In the resulting fight, Eivor bested Ciara and saw the Lia Fáil destroyed. After time, Flann rescinded the inquisition order out of respect for Ciara.[5]
