Tsuruga

Tsuruga is a city in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. During the Sengoku period, it was situated in Sotomo Gate in the Wakasa province.

History[edit | edit source]

In the early 8th century, Tsuruga worked as a point of entry for emissaries of the Korean Balhae kingdom and merchants of the Song dynasty. By the 14th century, it came under the control of the Ashikaga shogunate. It changed power to the Asakura clan in the 16th century. However, in 1573, Oda Nobunaga seized control of the city.[1]

In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke arrived in the city to find Niwa Nagahide and then entered its Tsuruga Castle to gain information about their attackers. After receiving information of a unique melody being played at Saifukuji Temple,[2] they later ventured through the city and caught sight of a post from a source detailing the criminal actions of the Pirate Alliance attacking the region. With this, they also sought out the pirate members of the collective.[3]

One of their leads happened to be in the city after Naoe and Yasuke saw a commotion regarding a deceased member, "The Poisoner", and his daughter Oni-yuri. There, the argument consisted of Oni-yuri having poisoned a group of thugs, who were insulting her departed father. The pair agreed to investigate and eventually recovered that their food and living stations were abysmal and filled with rotten supplies. Although the thugs still blamed Oni-yuri, the pair protected her while the thugs left. However, after Oni-yuri thanked them and left, the pair agreed to investigate her further.[4][3] While there, they also established a kakurega within the city.[5]
