Gaspar (died 1582), also known as The Architect, was a member of the Portuguese and Japanese Rites of the Templar Order during the late 16th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Activities in Japan[edit | edit source]

Upon his arrival in Japan, Gaspar began working to expand the Order's influence alongside fellow Templar Ermigo. Finding a translator named Rufino, Ermigo was ordered to use him to gather information about influential people within the provinces of Izumi Settsu, Yamashiro, and Ōmi. Gaspar then had Ermigo hire a group of killers to assassinate said people in order to allow the Templars to replace them with their own allies.[1]

However, Rufino eventually discovered the Templars' plan, ran from them, and found that his information was kept on a ship off the coast of Sakai. Learning of Rufino's betrayal, Gaspar ordered Ermigo to find and kill their former associate.[1] Ermigo failed in his task as Rufino soon found his way back to his old friend Tomiko's homestead, where he met Yasuke and Fujibayashi Naoe and enlisted their help to stop the killers hired by the Templars.[2]

Death[edit | edit source]

After eliminating all the killers and rescuing their targets, Naoe and Yasuke shared their findings with Rufino, who deciphered the location of Ermigo at Kashiwabara Fortress. However, Rufino gave Naoe and Yasuke a false location at Okinoshiroishi while he went to the fortress to confront Ermigo.[3] When Rufino arrived and argued with Ermigo about the latter using him, Gaspar waited inside the fortress' tower and soon witnessed the arrival of Yasuke and Naoe, who confronted Rufino about his lie.[1]

As Rufino explained that he sought to protect Ermigo, who was his friend, and hopefully convince him to abandon the Templars, Gaspar, having heard enough, made his presence known. He had his armed guards surround the group and blamed Ermigo for leading their enemies straight to them through his incompetence. Annoyed, he decided that everyone present must die and ordered his men to kill Rufino first. However, Ermigo stepped in front of his friend and took the shot meant for Rufino, before Naoe dropped a smoke bomb to cover them all.[1]

Once the smoke vanished, Gaspar and his men fought against Naoe, Yasuke, and Rufino, but were ultimately defeated and killed. Rufino then comforted Ermigo in his final moments and accepted Naoe and Yasuke's invite to join their league. Before leaving, Naoe and Yasuke recovered a note from Gaspar's body, which revealed his orders to secure the area around the Seta River and prepare for the arrival of members of the Black Cross, who were sent by the Inner Sanctum to succeed where Nuno Caro and Duarte de Melo had failed.[1]
