Hori Hidemasa (堀 秀政; 1553 – 1590) was a Japanese samurai who served as a retainer under Oda Nobunaga. Following Nobunaga's death in 1582, he served under his successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, becoming one of his greatest generals and participating in several of his most notable battles.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
By 1582, Hidemasa served in Oda Nobunaga's army,[2] but after the incident at Honnō-ji and Nobunaga's death,[3] he found new employment under Toyotomi Hideyoshi. While serving Hideyoshi, Hidemasa investigated the attack on Honnō-ji and discovered that Akechi Mitsuhide had been assisted by several Oda clan servants and soldiers, who facilitated the assault. He thus took it upon himself to find and exact retribution on these traitors.[2]
At Mii-dera, Hidemasa met and spoke with former Oda clan retainer Yasuke, now a member of the Kakushiba ikki. After sharing his findings, Hidemasa asked Yasuke and his fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe for assistance in tracking down and assassinating all the traitors responsible for Oda Nobunaga's death.[2]
While Naoe and Yasuke hunted down their targets, Hidemasa learned of delicate information concerning him and Nobunaga, which was held by one of the traitors, Endo Tomoyasu. Tracking him to Kii, Hidemasa eventually found and killed Tomoyasu at Kongōbu-ji. Soon after, he was found by Naoe and Yasuke, who urged him to leave the scene before he drew any unwanted attention. Back at Mii-dera, Hidemasa explained the reason for his presence in Kii and provided Yasuke with additional leads on the remaining traitors.[2]
After killing all of the targets, Yasuke returned to Hidemasa and informed him that the traitors had been dealt with. Thanking him for his help, Hidemasa gifted the samurai his helmet and bid him farewell as they parted ways.[2]
