The Capture of Berwick, also known as the Massacre of Berwick,[1] was the first significant battle of the First War of Scottish Independence. After the English invaded Scotland in May 1296, they marched towards Berwick, the then-most important trading port, and began to sack the town.[2]

The Sack of Berwick[edit | edit source]

During the battle, twins and Children of Fal Fillian and Ailéas aided their caretaker and tailor Alastair Aitken warn the town to evacuate before the English arrived.[3] However, the twins were the set objective of elimination for the Lann Fala and its leader Cornavii, who found and brutally interrogated Alastair. When the tailor refused to speak, Cornavii killed him while the twins watched. Fillan unfortunately whimpered and the Lann Fala heard and chased after the twins.[4]

However, the twins were separated when Ailéas was injured but found and taken by Commander Bradley Dacre. Meanwhile, Fillan managed to outrun both the Lann Fala and the English soldiers attacking the town. Although, he was soon found by an English soldier and froze. Fortunately, he was knocked out by Sören,[5] who brought him out of the town. When Fillan awoke and nearly ran, Sören explained that his sister was gone but he and his mercenaries were sent to bring him to the Brotherhood for safety. After seeing Berwick aflame, Fillan accepted and went with them.[6]
