The Clifftop Yamabushi (died 1582) was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he masqueraded as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Following the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga commissioned a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi. Their main task was to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who had survived the war. However, these soldiers became more disoriented and bloodthirsty, killing any innocent civilians in their path.[1]

In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku spoke with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these imposter monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by tracking and hunting down the perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead,[1] Naoe investigated the Path of the Chosen, which she had learned about after reading about an abandoned Assassin outpost in Kii from Alvaro Catarribera's journal.[2]

While traversing through the path, Naoe noticed dead bodies along the way, which she surmised to be the victims of one of the imposters. At the end of the path, Naoe saw the false yamabushi camped alone, confronted him, and promptly assassinated him. Naoe then retrieved the naginata Lustrous Pearl from the imposter's personal effects before leaving.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The Clifftop Yamabushi's location coincided with the location of another memory, "Kii Assassin Outpost."
