Battle of Fort Necessity

The Battle of Fort Necessity was one of the opening battles of the Seven Years' War.
History[edit | edit source]
In 1754, British colonial authorities[1] sent Lieutenant Colonel George Washington and a group of Virginian militia to the head of the Ohio River valley, a contested territory between British and French colonists. Their objective was to retake Fort Duquesne and drive the French out of the area. Before ever reaching the fort, the troops under Washington's command attacked a French patrol at Jumonville Glen,[2] without provocation.[3]
Washington expected a return attack and had his troops build a palisade wall surrounding their supplies—a "Fort of Necessity". Supplies ran low, and the militia as well as their British Regular reinforcements were quickly overwhelmed. On 4 July, Washington surrendered to the French and was allowed to retreat,[2] but signed a document saying their commander had been "assassinated".[3]
