Lady Satoko was a Japanese noblewoman from Sakai who lived during the 16th century.

Biography

The tea ceremony

Satoko: "I am Lady Satoko. I was unaware they allowed children at these ceremonies."

Satoko came from a family with a hunting background and married a man who was involved in the teppō trade. When not attending to her duties as a noble lady, she would set out to hunt bandits in the country, regarding them as scourges to society.

In early 1582, Satoko reluctantly attended a tea ceremony hosted by Imai Sōkyū on her husband's behalf, where she met fellow guests Otama, Wakasa, and Fujibayashi Naoe, the latter posing as a trader named Sanuki. Before the ceremony, Satoko exchanged greetings with Naoe, expressing her surprise to see someone so young at the event. She then spoke of her reluctance to attend the event, and that she would rather be out hunting bandits, expressing her disgust towards the outlaws. She also spoke of her family having maidservants who were trained in wielding the teppō, making a declaration that she would bring justice to the outlaws.

Later on, Satoko and the other guests, including Naoe, attended the tea ceremony with Sōkyū, with Satoko complimenting the taste of the tea. At the end of the ceremony, she presented a painting of wild geese to Sōkyū as a gift.

Baptism

In late June, Satoko, against her husband's desire and the locals' warnings, found herself born again as a Christian and prepared herself for her baptism in Ōtsu. While in the company of the Jesuit priest Luís Fróis, Satoko was met by Naoe and her fellow Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke, who were both acquaintances of Fróis. As they discussed their plans, Satoko and Fróis informed Naoe and Yasuke about threats against Satoko's life, prompting the pair to investigate the rumors. After confirming that there would be an attack on Fróis and his entourage, they warned the priest, though Satoko's baptism proceeded as planned, with Naoe and Yasuke promising to watch over the entourage as it left Ōtsu.

However, Fróis, Satoko, and their entourage departed the Otsu Upper District without Naoe and Yasuke and traveled north. While on the road, they were attacked by a collective of bandits and rōnin. Fortunately, Naoe and Yasuke arrived in time to repel the attackers and rescue the entourage. After dealing with the attackers, they found that both Fróis and Satoko were unharmed, if visibly shaken by the incident. Satoko thanked them and God for their help before Naoe and Yasuke left.
