The Pond Yamabushi (died 1582) was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he masqueraded as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Following the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi; they were to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who had survived the war. However, these soldiers became more callous and warped, killing any innocents in their way.[1]
In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku met with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and told them about these false monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by tracking and hunting down the perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead, Naoe investigated the Three-Trunked Tree in Ōmi but found no trace of the imposter. While there, she decided to meditate and began practicing kuji-kiri, but was attacked from behind by the false yamabushi.[1]
Fighting him, Naoe managed to best him and promptly killed the imposter. She then retrieved the ōdachi The Monk's Amendment from his personal effects, along with a letter, which dictated his numerous kills and his communication with one of his cohorts.[1]
