I wanted to ask you something. Which is... what's your name? This article title is conjecture. Although the article subject is canon, no official name for it has been given. |
The assassination attempt on Franz Joseph I of Austria was an act of attempted regicide of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, committed by a Hungarian tailor, János Libényi, who sought retribution for the military actions against the revolutionaries during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, especially against his sister. Secretly, the attempt was orchestrated by the shadowy figure known as the "Magus", who manipulated János to further his own goals.
The assassination attempt[edit | edit source]
The assassination plot was influenced by the Irish Assassin turncoat Oscar Kane, using the alias "Magus." The assassination was initially to be an experiment, conducted by Kane, for János to use one of his experimental weapons, without any ties back to him. However, János, impatient, wanted to kill the emperor sooner rather than wait for Kane's weapon.[1]
During a walk with his soldiers, Emperor Franz Joseph traveled alongside his military aide on his usual route. János, waiting with a kitchen knife in his hand, immediately went towards the emperor and stabbed him in the neck.[2]
Stunned, János was quickly restrained by his associates, Joseph Ettenreich and "Jack Straw," who tried to stop him but failed to reach him in time. The emperor bled from his injury but was able to survive as his military aide interrogated Straw and Ettenreich about the knife. After conferring over the knife, the aide thanked both men for saving the emperor, while Austrian soldiers took János into custody.[3]
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
Within days, János Libényi was sentenced and hanged for his attempted murder on the emperor, despite Kane's and Price's attempt to save and free him.[3] After János' attempt on the emperor's life, Kane had to reorganize and find a new person to try one of his new experimental weapons, without any trace to the Brotherhood.[1]
