Tenshō Iga War: Difference between revisions

The Tenshō Iga War (1579–1581) comprised the two invasions of Iga by Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period.^[1]^[2] First initiated on 6 October 1579^[3]^[4] as a poorly-enacted campaign under Nobunaga's second son Nobukatsu,^[5] his army fell into an ambush set by shinobi from the autonomous Iga ikki and was routed.^[6]

Furious that his son had foolishly left the job half-done, allowing it to become a larger problem when the emboldened Igans rallied allies, Nobunaga resolved to crush the resistance and personally took command of the army.^[7] He met with much greater success when he returned on 30 September 1581 with his new retainer Yasuke,^[3] razing down settlements across the province and all but destroying Iga.^[3]^[8] In a twist of fate, one of the surviving ninja, Fujibayashi Naoe,^[9] later joined forces with Yasuke to pursue the common goal of hunting their mutual enemy, the Shinbakufu.^[10]

The Tenshō Iga War is a historical event that was first mentioned in the Echoes of History podcast as part of promotions for the 2025 video game Assassin's Creed: Shadows before it appeared in the official trailer.^[11]^[12]
