Tenshō Iga War: Difference between revisions
imported>Sol Pacificus I'm unclear if "ikki" really meant the independent state, as it seems to be used in the Wikipedia article. The meaning of the word suggests to me it could have been applied by opponents to characterize it as an "insurgency" instead of an independent society. |

The Tenshō Iga War (1579–1581) comprised the two invasions of Iga by Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period.[1][2] First initiated on 6 October 1579[3][4] as a poorly-enacted campaign under Nobunaga's second son Nobukatsu,[5] his army fell into an ambush set by shinobi from the autonomous Iga ikki and was routed.[6]
Furious that his son had foolishly left the job half-done, allowing it to become a larger problem when the emboldened Igans rallied allies, Nobunaga resolved to crush the resistance and personally took command of the army.[7] He met with much greater success when he returned on 30 September 1581 with his new retainer Yasuke,[3] razing down settlements across the province and all but destroying Iga.[3][8] In a twist of fate, one of the surviving ninja, Fujibayashi Naoe,[9] later joined forces with Yasuke to pursue the common goal of hunting their mutual enemy, the Shinbakufu.[10]
