A Sengoku period shuriken

A shuriken (手裏剣; lit. 'blade hidden in hand') is a type of Japanese concealed weapon that is functionally similar to a throwing knife. Its most iconic form is a star-shaped projectile forged from steel which is thrown in a spinning motion to inflict injury with its pointed blades.[1] It was a staple of ninja and samurai during the Sengoku period[2] and into the Tokugawa era.[3]

Apart from its usage in Japan, certain elite units of the Ming military were also serviced with shuriken,[4][5][6][7] most notably the Jinyiwei secret police.[8] The Shimazu clan used shurikens against the British Assassin Edward Kenway when they encountered him in Macau in 1725.[3]

Due to their practicality as a ranged weapon, the use of shurikens has endured into modern times. In 2017, the Instruments of the First Will utilized shurikens against the Assassin Charlotte de la Cruz and her ally, Guernica Moneo, during an ambush in Hong Kong, severing two of Moneo's fingers in the process.[9]
