"[The Assassins] are no brothers of mine, and neither are the Templars. The only creed we follow is the one we swore to ourselves. "We never abandon our family.""
―Nathan to Claire Zhang, regarding his allegiances, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

Nathan Zhang (Chinese: 張內森; born c. 1990s) is a Chinese criminal and Assassin who serves as the leader of Doom Eagle, an international criminal organization based in Southeast Asia. A descendant of a Zhawang Corporation member back when it was founded as the Zhang Wei Union, he is the younger brother of the company's current director Claire Zhang. He is a descendant of the British Templar John Young.[2]

In 2023, Nathan led the Corporation's efforts to rescue Noa Kim, a descendant of the company's founder Edward Kenway, who had been abducted by Abstergo Industries in order to use his genetic memories to find a set of three Pieces of Eden. After a failed attempt to retrieve Noa in Cebu, Nathan struck an alliance with the Templar Shimazu Sei to ensure Noa's safety when Sei's superiors ordered his termination.

Following Noa's retrieval of the first Piece of Eden, a crescent amulet, from the Strait of Malacca, Nathan helped him, Sei, and the latter's bodyguard Yuki escape from Abstergo and brought them to a safehouse in Singapore. There, Sei volunteered to relive her ancestor Shimazu Saito's memories to find another Piece of Eden that could cure Noa of the amulet's effects.

After successfully recovering the second artifact from the Shwedagon Pagoda, the group found themselves being hunted by Abstergo's Sigma Team. Thanks to Yuki and Sei sacrificing themselves to buy them time to escape, resulting in the former's death and the latter's capture, Nathan and Noa were able to flee Yangon and meet with a group of Assassins sent by Claire, who brought them to the Zhawang Corporation's headquarters in Jakarta.

After an alliance between the Corporation, the Assassins, and DedSec was formed to fight against Abstergo, Nathan accompanied Noa to Osaka, where the latter aimed to rescue Sei from the Templars' captivity. Successful in their mission, they returned to Jakarta, where Noa continued to explore Edward's memories in search of the "Forgotten Temple" that could unlock the Pieces of Eden's full potential, hoping to find it before Abstergo.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Early life[edit | edit source]

"At the very least... it would prevent anyone else from suffering as you did."
―Claire to Nathan, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

Nathan and his sister Claire were born into the Zhawang Corporation, an organization that had worked alongside the Assassins to safeguard a number of Pieces of Eden from the Templars until the early 20th century, when their ties were indefinitely severed. While Claire followed in their father's footsteps by becoming the Corporation's director,[1] Nathan embraced his Assassin heritage and joined the Brotherhood. At some point, he also relived the memories of his Assassin ancestors in the Animus, gaining their abilities through the Bleeding Effect.[3]

However, Nathan's faith in the Creed was shaken after a particularly traumatic incident, implied by Claire to have been caused by the Templars. Subsequently distancing himself from the Brotherhood and declaring his loyalty to be to the Zhawang Corporation first and foremost,[4] Nathan started his own criminal organization, Doom Eagle, which occasionally worked alongside the Corporation.[5] At some point, he also became acquainted with the DedSec hacker group, who would come to owe him a favor.[6]

Activities in Macau[edit | edit source]

"If they're heading to the Philippines, then more power to them. They'll be sailing right into our territory."
―Nathan talking to Claire on the phone about Abstergo, c. 2023.[src]-[m]
Nathan with members of Doom Eagle in Macau

In 2023, the Zhawang Corporation learned about Noa Kim, a Korean-American descendant of the British Assassin Edward Kenway, who had originally founded the company as the Zhang Wei Union. Regarding Noa as a member of their "family", Nathan and Claire sought to rescue him following his abduction by Abstergo Industries, who forced Noa to relive Edward's memories to locate a Piece of Eden found by his ancestor.[5]

Working together, the Corporation and Doom Eagle organized an ambush during Noa's trip with the Templar Shimazu Sei to the A-Ma Cultural Village in Macau. While two of Claire's operatives approached Noa and tried to convince him to leave with them, Nathan had several of his thugs attack Sei and her bodyguards as a distraction. However, the rescue mission ultimately failed as Noa refused to leave with the operatives and defeated the thugs to protect Sei.[7]

Sometime later, Nathan was present at the Macau harbor where he watched the Exitus, the Abstergo research vessel which Noa was held aboard, depart for Cebu in the Philippines. After one of Claire's agents called her to update her on the ship's status, Nathan snatched away the agent's phone to talk to his sister.[5]

Claiming that Abstergo was "rude" for keeping their "family member" away from them, Nathan asked Claire to let him and his organization handle Noa's rescue. As Doom Eagle had a foothold in the Philippines, Claire acquiesced to Nathan's request but warned him to keep a low profile. However, Nathan pointed out that, because of their failed attack in the A-Ma Cultural Village, Abstergo had likely increased their security, so avoiding a fight was easier said than done.[5]

Attempt to rescue Noa in Cebu[edit | edit source]

"You really are the descendant of the infamous Edward Kenway! The rest of you, stay out of this. I think I've finally found my match."
―Nathan, prior to his fight with Noa, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

Upon arriving in Cebu, Nathan and his men tracked down the Abstergo convoy that Noa was in and manipulated the traffic to force the convoy to travel through another route, where Doom Eagle had laid an ambush. When the Abstergo convoy went down the alternate route, Nathan and his gang opened fire on it,[8] forcing the vehicle Noa, Sei, and the latter's bodyguard Yuki were in to push its way out of the attack.[9]

Nathan and his gang in Cebu

Nathan's men pursued the vehicle to a nearby shopping mall, where it crashed into a water fountain. Nathan arrived at the crash site, where his men exchanged fire with the Abstergo operatives. After Noa escaped into the mall with Sei, Nathan pursued them, disabling the security guards at the entrance. Not willing to risk a gunfight with so many civilians around, Nathan ordered his men to drop their guns and use only melee weapons to capture Noa, while also asking for Sei to be killed.[9]

However, Noa, having gained Edward's skills thanks to the Bleeding Effect, was able to fight off all the Doom Eagle thugs pursuing him and Sei. Watching from a balcony, Nathan was impressed and decided to "kick things up a notch" by firing his pistol into the air. This caused the civilians to panic, believing there were terrorists inside the mall. Despite the resulting commotion, Noa and Sei were able to make their way to the top floor, where Abstergo reinforcements were set to arrive, only to find Nathan and his men waiting for them.[10]

After praising Noa's skills, Nathan offered him a deal to spare Sei if Noa came with him willingly. However, Noa refused, claiming that he could not trust Nathan, to which the latter laughed and asked Noa how he expected to protect both himself and Sei from his gang. Agreeing with Nathan that Sei was just "dead weight" and would slow him down, Noa pushed her off the balcony and onto an inflatable castle below. He then prepared to battle Nathan's thugs, but the Assassin ordered his men to stand down, as he wished to fight Noa himself.[10]

Nathan facing off against Noa

During their brawl, Noa realized that Nathan was an Assassin upon seeing him use one of the Brotherhood's signature moves. Nathan then offered to tell Noa the truth about his father who had abandoned him, which angered Noa. However, upon being pinned to a wall, Noa was forced to listen to Nathan as he revealed that his father was an Assassin who had abandoned his family to protect them from the Templars. After Nathan implied that Sei had helped the Templars in their hunt of the Assassins, a furious Noa headbutted him and began viciously punching him.[3]

Recovering from Noa's surprise attack, Nathan pinned him to the ground and threatened to break his arm if he did not surrender. After Noa claimed that he would not give up without a fight, an impressed Nathan let him go and told him that the time was up, as Abstergo's Sigma Team had arrived at the mall. He then gave Noa the sea log of Edward's companion Rupiya, which contained information to aid him in his quest, and told him to stay true to the Creed and see where it led him.[3]

When Noa questioned Nathan's sudden change of heart, the Assassin told him that it was not his place to prevent him from following his own path. However, he warned Noa that, if he continued following in Edward's footsteps for much longer, he might end up consumed by the "spirits of the past". Finally, after reminding Noa that the Zhang Wei Union was always at the service of their "family" and would come rescue him if he ever required help, Nathan took his leave, moments before Sigma Team showed up and secured Noa.[3]

Nathan on the phone with Claire

Following his escape from Abstergo, Nathan called Claire, who reprimanded him for his recklessness and for almost running into Sigma Team, though Nathan was confident that they would have posed no challenge. When Claire expressed concern regarding Abstergo's search for the Piece of Eden, Nathan assured her that Noa would ultimately side with his "family" and deliver the artifact to the Union.[4]

Claire stated that she hoped Nathan was right about Noa, as keeping the Piece of Eden out of Abstergo's hands was the only way to ensure no one else would have to suffer like Nathan had. Nathan then pondered if the Brotherhood thought the same, before claiming that the Assassins were no brothers of his and that the only creed he and Claire followed was the one they had sworn to themselves: to never abandon family.[4]

Deal with Shimazu Sei[edit | edit source]

"Pretty soon, he'll suffer the same fate as all the other test subjects. But let me guess, you don't want that, do you? That's why I called you specifically, Supervisor Shimazu. We both want something from each other... So let's be rational and reasonable about this. I'm sure we can work out some sort of a deal..."
―Nathan proposing a deal to Sei to ensure Noa's safety, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

Following the events in Cebu, Nathan decided to take a "vacation", going out at sea on a yacht. While relaxing, he called Claire to inform her that he had prepared an ambush for Abstergo when the company inevitably attempted to retrieve a crescent amulet – a Piece of Eden – from the Strait of Malacca. Claire believed the plan to be too reckless, but Nathan assured her that he was not acting alone and that he had enlisted the help of some "old friends" from DedSec to put him in contact with Shimazu Sei.[6]

Nathan on his "vacation"

Once DedSec breached the Exitus' security system, they put him on call with Sei. Aware that the Templar's superiors had ordered Noa's termination, Nathan claimed that he and Sei both wanted something from each other, as neither of them wished to see Noa meet the fate of Abstergo's other test subjects. As such, he proposed a mutually beneficial deal to ensure Noa's safety, which Sei reluctantly accepted. Nathan then ended the call while DedSec restored control of the Exitus back to Abstergo.[6]

During Abstergo's attempt to retrieve the crescent amulet from the shipwreck of the SS Ourang Medan, Nathan had his men survey the Abstergo ship from afar. After Noa and Sei's bodyguard Yuki used a diving bell to descend to the shipwreck's location, Nathan told his men to prepare to commence their "family heist", intending to steal the amulet from the Templars.[11]

Following Noa and Yuki's successful retrieval of the amulet and return to the Abstergo ship, Nathan, who had been surveying the ship with a drone, decided to initiate his plan to retrieve both the Piece of Eden and Noa. He boarded a speedboat and told his men, who were riding jetskis, to commence "Operation: Family Rescue", heading towards the Abstergo vessel.[12]

Nathan helping Noa, Sei, and Yuki escape from Abstergo

While his men battled the ship's guards, Nathan expressed disappointment at Sigma Team's failure to put up a better fight, remarking that he had more fun facing Noa in Cebu. Just then, Sei and Yuki arrived carrying the amulet in a briefcase, as well as Noa, who had been severely weakened by the Piece of Eden's powers. Upon seeing Noa's condition, Nathan angrily confronted Sei and demanded to know what Abstergo had done to him, claiming that went against the terms of their deal.[13]

Sei promised that she had thought of a solution to cure Noa, just as more Sigma Team operatives arrived and ordered the group to surrender. With no other options left, Nathan told Sei, Noa, and Yuki to jump onto his speedboat, whereupon they escaped from the Abstergo ship and traveled to Singapore to lay low.[13]

Hiding out in Singapore[edit | edit source]

"You know, I had a feeling it was way too easy to sell you on our plan. It was almost like you were waiting to turn your back on Abstergo. It seems to me, Supervisor Shimazu, that you're just as unhinged as we are. Well, that's just how I like it, princess! You're about to find out how fun it really is to peek into your bloodline's past."
―Nathan to Sei, before she entered the Animus, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

At a Zhawang Corporation safehouse in Singapore's Chinatown district, Noa was taken to receive immediate medical attention due to his worsening condition. Sei advised that Noa be tied to a bed due to his Bleeding Effect making him extremely unpredictable, and explained to Nathan that Noa was not showing the symptoms commonly associated with the Bleeding Effect, meaning he was fighting to retain his sense of self. She then offered to explain her plan to save Noa's life and led Nathan to another room, where Yuki had set up a prototype Animus HR-8.[13]

After showing Nathan the footage gathered from Edward Kenway's memories, Sei explained that historical records indicated Edward had made a full recovery from the crescent amulet's effects. She then theorized that another Piece of Eden had played a role in Edward's recovery, meaning that their best chance to save Noa was to track down this second artifact. To do so, Sei volunteered to relive the memories of her ancestor, Shimazu Saito.[13]

Nathan watching over Sei in the Animus

As Sei prepared to enter the Animus, Nathan taunted her about the dangers of her plan, claiming that she would soon discover how "fun" it was to peek into her bloodline's past. After telling Nathan to keep his guard up at all times, as Abstergo would surely attempt to track them down, Sei had Yuki boot up the Animus and began synchronizing with Saito's memories.[13]

Later, Nathan called Claire to update her about all the recent events. When Claire expressed her frustration with the sudden change of plans, Nathan reminded her of their duty to keep the Pieces of Eden out of unworthy hands and stated that Sei's genetic memories were currently their best lead to track down another artifact. Claire then claimed that the only reason they needed the Pieces was to fight against Abstergo, to which Nathan responded that the artifacts' power tended to be unpredictable, as Sei herself had discovered, prompting her to turn to them for help, and now all they had to do was wait and watch.[14]

When Sei began to suffer from the Bleeding Effect and had to be removed from the Animus, Nathan laughed at her predicament, claiming that the doctor was finally experiencing what she had put her past test subjects through. Noa then arrived and volunteered to take Sei's place in the Animus.[15]

After Sei protested and rebuked Nathan for allowing Noa, his so-called "family member", to endanger himself, the Assassin angrily told Sei that she did not understand the first thing about family and that Noa was risking his life for hers because he trusted her. He then threatened to kill Sei, should her plan to save Noa fail.[15]

Nathan informing Sei of Sigma Team's raid on a neighboring building

Eventually, Edward's memories revealed the whereabouts of a Piece of Eden in the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar. As Sei remarked that the entire country was in the midst of a civil war, which would likely complicate their mission, Nathan informed her that Abstergo had tracked them down and dispatched Sigma Team to capture them. Fortunately, thanks to a false tip, the agents were currently raiding a different building across the street, giving them enough time to escape.[16]

After Sei woke Noa up from the Animus and gave him an adrenaline shot, the group left the safehouse and prepared for their journey to Myanmar.[16] However, as they ran through an alley, they were attacked by several Sigma Team members, initiating a fight.[17]

Nathan fired his pistol at their assailants and watched as both Noa and Sei, using the skills they had gained through the Bleeding Effect, took down the Sigma Team operatives. Nathan jokingly remarked that Noa and Sei's ancestors must be looking out for them before ordering them and Yuki to follow his lead. The group subsequently made their way to a nearby seaplane and flew to a cargo ship which would bring them to Myanmar. Aboard the ship, Nathan briefly talked to Sei before the latter decided to return to the Animus to continue exploring Saito's memories.[17]

Shwedagon Pagoda heist[edit | edit source]

Nathan: "Don't worry about me. This is why I called in a favor, remember? You know, from some very old family friends of ours."
Claire: "Was it really necessary to get them involved?"
Nathan: "Hell yeah it was. We've got a family member on the line here. We're in too deep to turn back now. It was only a matter of time until they found out anyway."
—Nathan informing Claire of his decision to request help from the Assassins, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

As their ship sailed into Yangon, Nathan went to wake Sei up from the Animus with a slap. Yuki immediately threatened Nathan for daring to lay his hands on her boss, but Sei calmed Yuki down and told her that there was no time to bicker among themselves. She then asked Nathan if there was a point to his slap or he just wanted to "settle a score", to which the Assassin informed Sei that they had arrived at their destination.[18]

Nathan and Sei arriving at the Shwedagon Pagoda

The group subsequently entered Yangon, easily bypassing a military checkpoint. As Nathan drove them to the Shwedagon Pagoda, he and Sei discussed the ongoing civil war in Myanmar, with Nathan expressing his belief that the war was the reason the military did not give foreigners much trouble. Eventually arriving at the temple, Nathan and Sei admired the pagoda, which was heavily guarded.[18]

Nathan explained that the military was replacing the pagoda's golden panels to prevent their theft, and dismissed the rumors that the soldiers were taking the panels for themselves, claiming the army would not want to risk a major scandal. With no obvious way in, Nathan and Sei concluded that the only way to enter the pagoda was to break in, before the Assassin asked the doctor if she had picked up any of Saito's skills from her time in the Animus. Sei proceeded to display her new mastery of the kunai and claimed that she knew exactly where to find Shwedagon's Piece of Eden.[18]

Later that night, Nathan called Claire to update her about his mission. He also informed her that he had contacted the Assassin Brotherhood for help, much to the annoyance of Claire, who asked if it was really necessary. Nathan insisted that they needed all the assistance they could get to save Noa and that the Assassins would have found out about their operations sooner or later anyway.[18]

Once all the preparations were complete, Nathan and his men attacked the soldiers guarding the Shwedagon Pagoda, engaging them in a shootout. This distraction allowed Sei and Noa to infiltrate the pagoda unnoticed, where they attempted to retrieve the Piece of Eden.[18] However, during the fight, Nathan witnessed Sigma Team arrive and rappel down onto his location, forcing him and his men to engage the Abstergo agents.[19]

Nathan and Yuki running away after dropping explosives on Sigma Team

With Yuki's help, Nathan and his men held off Sigma Team long enough for Noa and Sei to escape the pagaoda with the Piece of Eden. Nathan then threw a grenade at the Sigma operatives, before Yuki had her drone drop additional explosives to cover their escape. After making it to safety, Yuki volunteered to drive to Noa and Sei's location, despite having been shot during the fight. Upon picking up Noa and Sei, the group drove away from Yangon to escape from the Abstergo forces hunting them.[20]

Arriving at a safehouse in the countryside, Nathan and the others discussed their next course of action while Sei tended to Yuki's injuries. The Assassin suggested stealing a seaplane from a hangar near Yangon's harbor to flee Myanmar, while Yuki instead proposed using the two Pieces of Eden in their possession to fight against Abstergo. Nathan opposed this idea, pointing out that the artifacts' power was useless against the Templars' superior technology, and accused Yuki and Sei of wanting to use the Pieces for their own gain.[21]

In response, Yuki accused Nathan of wanting the artifacts just as badly, to which the Assassin insisted that he only wished to safeguard them and had no intention of abusing their power. Nathan and Yuki's fight was eventually broken up by Noa, who insisted that the only things that mattered were their survival and keeping the Pieces out of Abstergo's reach. He then suggested separating the artifacts to reduce the risk of losing both, and handed Sei the artifact recovered from the Shwedagon Pagoda while he took the crescent amulet. Afterwards, the group left the safehouse, returning to Yangon.[21]

Escape from Yangon[edit | edit source]

Sei: "What took you so damn long?! We just lost Yuki because of you!"
Nathan: "Yeah, it's a real shame, but she sacrificed herself to buy you some time. Thanks to her, I managed to make it back with the Animus, so maybe think about that before you get all worked up."
—Nathan defending himself to Sei, c. 2023.[src]-[m]
Nathan preparing to save his captive men

While infiltrating Yangon's harbor, Nathan stood back alongside Sei and Yuki and watched as Noa effortlessly dispatched all Sigma Team operatives in their path. Impressed, the Assassin told Noa that he was making his "family" proud and instructed him to head to the hangar with Sei and Yuki while he went to free his captive men, who were being held aboard their own ship.[22]

Armed with a silenced pistol, Nathan took out several Sigma Team operatives on his way to the ship's bridge, where the captive Doom Eagle members were located. After throwing a stun grenade into the room, blinding the guards, Nathan quickly gunned them down and freed his men. However, as he turned to leave, he failed to notice that one of the Sigma operatives was still alive. After the Templar alerted the rest of his team to the enemy's presence, Nathan finished him off, but it was already too late. Within moments, the entire harbor was placed on high alert and Abstergo reinforcements were called.[22]

With Sigma Team on their tail, Nathan and his men began running towards the hangar. However, since Nathan had decided to retrieve the Animus HR-8 from the ship, he was slowed down significantly, allowing the Abstergo agents to catch up. Just as the operatives were about to open fire, Yuki arrived and engaged them in a shootout by herself. An impressed Nathan commented that he knew Sei must keep a "guard dog" around for a reason before fleeing to safety.[23]

As he arrived at the hangar, Nathan was confronted by a furious Sei, who asked him why he had taken so long before revealing that Yuki had been killed by Sigma Team because of him. The Assassin tried to defend himself, revealing that he had brought the Animus with him and insisting that Yuki's sacrifice was not in vain, as she had bought them enough time to escape. At that moment, however, more Sigma operatives arrived and surrounded the hangar, trapping Nathan, Sei, and Noa inside.[23]

Sei using the amulet against Nathan

Out of options, Sei seized the crescent amulet from Noa, prompting Nathan to aim his pistol at the doctor and order her to stand down, believing she was betraying them. However, Sei used the Piece of Eden on Nathan, making him stand down, then turned to face the incoming Sigma Team members. As the Templars were subdued by the amulet's powers, Sei told Noa to escape with the second artifact, which she had left inside the seaplane, and put her faith in him that he would find and rescue her so they could finish what they had started together.[24]

Nathan's men subsequently grabbed Noa and together they boarded the seaplane, taking off. Although a Sigma Team operative fired a rocket launcher at them as they flew away, he narrowly missed, allowing the group to escape to safety while Sei was captured.[24]

Saved by the Assassins[edit | edit source]

Noa: "Wait, the Assassins have anti-aircraft systems now?"
Nathan: "You think those dusty old Assassins have anyone in their roster with a degree in electronic warfare? Nope, you're lucky I've got some very clever friends!"
—Noa and Nathan as they escaped from the island, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

Noa, Nathan and his men flew to an uncharted island used as a hideout by the Zhawang Corporation, where Nathan believed that they would be safe for a time. Reflecting on the recent events, Nathan expressed his surprise at the fact Sei had sacrificed herself to save them and jokingly claimed that she had done so because of her feelings for Noa, but the latter responded that Sei only wanted him to help her finish her mission. Nathan then remarked that, as long as they kept the Piece of Eden in their possession out of Abstergo's reach, they would win by default, but Noa insisted that the Templars would never stop hunting them.[24]

Concluding that they needed to follow in their ancestors' footsteps and track down the third and final artifact, Noa entered the Animus HR-8 to continue reliving Edward's memories. Meanwhile, Nathan and his men monitored him and stood guard in the event Abstergo tracked them down.[24]

Personality and traits[edit | edit source]

"Nothing is true, everything is permitted. Stay true to the Creed and see where it leads you."
―Nathan to Noa Kim, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

Nathan Zhang was a highly unpredictable individual who, according to his sister Claire, had a tendency to "blow things out of proportion".[5] Having become disillusioned with the Assassins and their Creed after a deeply traumatizing incident,[4] Nathan preferred to do things his own way, which often involved getting into public and very destructive confrontations alongside his gang, enjoying the chaos he left in his wake. Despite this, he did not completely abandon the Creed's tenets and drew the line at civilian casualties, which he tried to avoid.[9]

Nathan advising Noa to stay true to the Creed

Nathan possessed a dark sense of humor and could be quite sadistic, only caring about the well-being of those he regarded as members of his "family".[9] However, he could be equally friendly to his close peers, especially those who managed to earn his respect, such as Noa Kim.[22] Despite starting out as enemies and Nathan initially belittling Noa due to his lack of fighting skills and killer instincts, the Assassin was impressed by Noa's boldness and let him go after giving him some words of advice, respecting Noa's dedication to the pursuit of his own path.[3] While they were not blood-related, Nathan nonetheless regarded Noa as his "brother" and, as the latter demonstrated more advanced Assassin skills, Nathan began to feel proud of his growth.[22]

By contrast, Nathan was resentful of Shimazu Sei due to her past affiliation with the Templars and her involvement with the Animus Project. While he did not trust the doctor and even threatened to kill her at one point,[15] he agreed to work with her since they shared a common goal of protecting Noa and fighting against Abstergo.[13] This, however, did not prevent Nathan from laughing at Sei's suffering caused by the Bleeding Effect, as he enjoyed the irony of the doctor experiencing what she had put her test subjects through.[15]

When Sei seized the crescent amulet from Noa, Nathan immediately assumed that she was betraying them and threatened her at gunpoint, only to be proven wrong when the doctor instead sacrificed herself to allow Noa and Nathan to escape from Sigma Team, resulting in her capture. After this, Nathan's opinion of Sei seemingly improved, as he admitted that he had misjudged her and began teasing Noa about his and Sei's feelings towards each other.[24][25] When DedSec later suggested killing Sei to prevent Abstergo from exploiting her genetic memories, Nathan eagerly supported the plan.[1] However, he did not oppose Noa's decision to save the doctor instead, and even helped him carry out the mission and expressed slight concern for Sei's well-being after she was rescued.[25]

Nathan arguing with Yuki

Nathan similarly held a low opinion of Yuki due to the bodyguard's blind loyalty to Sei; in turn, Yuki found Nathan's comedic gestures and comments annoying, and the two would frequently bicker as a result.[18][21] After Yuki sacrificed herself to allow Nathan and his men to escape from Sigma Team, the Assassin expressed remorse for her death to Sei, though he quickly brushed it aside, insisting that their survival was more important.[23]

Despite his apparent nonchalant exterior, Nathan was deeply protective of his "family", going out of his way to rescue his men captured by Abstergo.[22] He was also dedicated to the Zhawang Corporation's cause of safeguarding the Pieces of Eden from the Templars, regarding the artifacts as powerful and dangerous weapons that no human should wield.[14][21]

Skills and equipment[edit | edit source]

"You're not the only one who's got ancestors, dude. If anything, I've spent a hell of a lot longer in this line of work than you!"
―Nathan to Noa, c. 2023.[src]-[m]

Nathan was a skilled hand-to-hand fighter, maintaining the upper hand for most of his fight with Noa, who had absorbed Edward Kenway's skills through the Bleeding Effect. He was able to anticipate most of Noa's attacks in real time and was only caught off-guard when the latter suddenly decided to headbutt him, though he quickly recovered afterwards. Nathan also appeared to toy with Noa for most of their fight, criticizing him for lacking a "killer instinct" and being just a "pale imitation of Kenway".[3]

Nathan performing a leap attack against Noa

Part of Nathan's combat prowess owed to his own Assassin ancestors, whose abilities he gained after reliving their memories in the Animus. He also claimed to have studied all the knowledge passed down through generations of the Zhawang Corporation, which further refined his skills.[3]

Likely because of his confidence in his own fighting skills, Nathan did not carry any weapons with him, not even a Hidden Blade. Although he did possess a pistol, he only rarely made use of it.[10] Despite this, when the situation demanded it, he proved to be a more than capable marksman, wielding two pistols against Sigma Team in Yangon and even throwing a grenade at them.[20]

In situations that required a stealthier approach, Nathan equipped his pistol with a silencer, allowing him to quietly take out targets from a distance.[22] He also proved adept at using disguises, as seen during his mission to Osaka, where he and his men disguised themselves as firefighters to aid Noa and the Assassins' escape from the Abstergo Genetic Research Lab.[25]
