Ise (伊勢国, Ise no Kuni) was a province of Japan whose territory now consists of most of the Mie Prefecture in the present day. During the Sengoku period, the province bordered Iga, Yamato, and Ōmi to the west, Mino to the north, Owari to the east, and Shima to the south.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
By 1562, the Portuguese Templar Balthazar had set up an a slave trade operation at a port in the region. He worked with the local monks and abducted women and children to be sold as servants for a profit.[2] However, his enterprise took notice of Iga shinobi master Momochi Sandayu, who shared his findings with both his student Fujibayashi Masayasu and the Japanese Assassin and ally Tsuyu. As a result, Tsuyu left to investigate and followed Sandayu's last lead at an inn.[3]
When she arrived at the Old Inn of the Fifty Emblems, Tsuyu tried to find Sandayu's contact but noticed the arrival of Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou, who had been fighting any challenger and taking their arms as his prize. When questioned by the innkeeper, Tsuyu nearly froze until Masayasu came and introduced themselves as newlyweds.[3] Together, they posed as amateur performers while at the inn until they met with the contact, who informed them of the port and its current slave operation. However, the contact was unfortunately a fraud working for Balthazar that had killed Sandayu's contact. Tsuyu, not wanting to risk Masayasu's life, decided to venture to the docks alone.[4]
Upon her investigation, Tsuyu came across the operation and discovered Balthazar, the Templar who had enslaved her when she was younger, was in charge of the operation. However, while hidden, Tsuyu was ambushed and poisoned with a paralytic agent. Immobilized, Tsuyu was forcibly interrogated about the Imperial Regalia and the shinobi in Iga but she remained silent. Before he could kill her,[2] Masayasu intervened and killed Balthazar's guards. Fighting each other, Masayasu narrowly beat Balthazar and ultimately killed him. Freeing the slaves nearby, Masayasu carried Tsuyu and escaped on a boat from the port.[5]
