Lady Tsukiyama (築山殿, c. 1539 – 1579), also known as Sena (瀬名), was Tokugawa Ieyasu's first wife and the mother of Matsudaira Nobuyasu and Kamehime.[2]
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1561, Sena and her children were held captive at Imagawa Mansion under Imagawa Ujizane's care. While she tried reassuring her kids of their safety, Ujizane taunted her, promising to "relieve" them when they no longer proved useful.[3]
The next year, Sena and her kids were taken to Kaminogō Castle after Ujizane and his fellow Templar and Jesuit priest Paulino Massa realized that Ieyasu, then known as Matsudaira Takechiyo, would send someone to rescue them. While she was being taken to the castle, she saw her husband's retainers Hattori Hanzō and Watanabe Moritsuna escaping from the mansion.[4] Held hostage with her kids, Sena stood defiant against Udono Nagateru's comments and threats. When Hanzō arrived and tried to rescue her, Massa appeared and stopped him. When Nagateru complained about his presence, Massa shot the samurai dead and then held Sena and her kids at gunpoint. He then gave Hanzō a choice, the information about the Imperial Regalia or their lives.[5]
