Udono Nagateru (鵜殿 長照) (died 1562) was a Japanese samurai of the Udono clan and a retainer under the Imagawa clan during the Sengoku period. He also happened to be Imagawa Yoshimoto's nephew.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1562, Udono Nagateru invited one of Imagawa Ujizane's concubines Okiku to the Imagawa Mansion to discuss her role for the clan. Discussing how he and Jesuit priest Paulino Massa work to rebuild the Imagawa clan's power, he admitted his disappointment over her lack of male heirs for the clan. While she tried to apologize for her failings, he stated to her to not bother. Immediately, Okiku fell to the floor dead while he relayed that he poisoned her sake for her results and impure blood before chastizing her to stand up.[2]
Nagateru was later ordered to take Sena to Kaminogō Castle after they prepared for Matsudaira Takecihyo to send a shinobi to rescue his family. While riding to the castle, he caught sight of Takechiyo's retainers Hattori Hanzō and Watanabe Moritsuna escaping from the mansion.[3] Arriving at the castle, he began to insult Sena's family and threatened her in front of her children. However, Hanzō caught up and threw a shuriken at Nagateru, only for it to be stopped by one of Paulino Massa's throwing knives. Massa then thanked Nagateru for bringing Hanzō to him, and, when Nagateru outright stated his discomfort, Massa immediately shot and killed him, stating that he had proved his use.[4]
