The Imagawa Mansion

The Imagawa Mansion was the residence of the Imagawa clan, located in Mikawa Province, Japan.

History[edit | edit source]

By 1561, Imagawa Ujizane assumed power of his clan[1] after his father Imagawa Yoshimoto's downfall to Oda Nobunaga[2] and started to meet with the Italian Jesuit priest and Templar Paulino Massa. Over time, Massa made visits solely to Ujizane and soon recruited him into the Templar Order.[1] While seeking the Imperial Regalia, Massa promised Ujizane the responsibility to find the Regalia and place him into power.[3] However, Matsudaira Takechiyo, having been to the mansion recently, recalled Ujizane's meeting with Massa, much to his concern.[1]

Within the year, Ujizane, acting against Takechiyo, forcibly held Takechiyo's wife Sena and their kids Matsudaira Nobuyasu and Kamehime in his mansion to hold power over Takechiyo.[1] With his family taken hostage, Takechiyo enlisted his samurai and retainer Watanabe Moritsuna to find a worthy associate to assist him in the rescue plan. Ultimately, Moritsuna found Hattori Hanzō, whose family happened to serve Takechiyo, and brought him to Takechiyo. After a brief discussion, Hanzō agreed to help, as it coincided with his own mission from Master Assassin Alvaro Catarribera to find the Templars' base in Mikawa.[1]

In 1562, planned with Moritsuna, Hanzō stealthily infiltrated the mansion while Moritsuna stood watch outside the perimeter. Inside, he made his way into one of the residences, where he came upon a conversation between Imagawa retainer Udono Nagateru and Ujizane's concubine Okiku. While Hanzō eavesdropped on the conversation, Nagateru reprimanded Okiku for her failure to support the Imagawa clan by providing a male heir. When Okiku apologized for her actions, she suddenly fell onto the floor dead as Nagateru admitted that he poisoned her sake. Although enraged, Hanzō left to continue his search for Takechiyo's family.[4]

Although sneaking through the grounds, Hanzō was soon spotted by one of the Imagawa guards waking up. Catching his gaze, Hanzō nearly killed him but the soldier Amano Kageyasu offered to help as he knew the Imagawa clan would fall and led Hanzō around the grounds. Finding their way to Sena's cell, Hanzō was nearly overcome with anguish as he saw a dead woman.[5] In his misery, Hanzō was then taunted by Ujizane, who came by and ridiculed him whether he knew the truth of Sena and how Massa was right all along. Before it could go further, Kageyasu knocked Ujizane down. Yet, the bell was rung as the soldiers moved to find the intruders. While Hanzō and Kageyasu made their escape, Moritsuna moved and dispatched all of the guards in his way. Meeting up together, Moritsuna, Hanzō, and Kageyasu fled the grounds despite not having Sena and the children yet.[6]
