Momochi Sandayu (百地 三太夫; died 1581) was a Japanese shinobi who served as a leader of the Iga ikki during the late Sengoku period. He was a member of the Kakushiba ikki alongside Fujibayashi Nagato and Tsuyu who devoted themselves to defending and protecting a prized artifact hidden in the Mihata Kofun.

Biography

Meeting Fujibayashi Masayasu

By 1560, Sandayu had become one of Iga's most renowned shinobi and took on an apprentice, the talented but arrogant Hattori Hanzō. Around this time, he and Hanzō made the acquaintance of the Assassin Alvaro Catarribera and his apprentice, the ever-stoic Tsuyu. Due to the similarities between the Assassins and shinobi's ideologies and modus operandi, Sandayu and Catarribera quickly became friends, laying the foundations of a strong alliance between their respective organizations.[1]

One day, Sandayu and Hanzō traveled to an Igan village under attack by two corrupt samurai demanding tribute. Hanzō came to the rescue of Fujibayashi Masayasu, a farmer who had attempted to fight off the samurai but found himself overwhelmed. When Masayasu asked to be trained as a shinobi so he could better protect his people, Hanzō insulted him in response but Sandayu saw potential in the young farmer and offered him a chance to prove his skills in a fight against Hanzō.[1]

During Masayasu and Hanzō's duel, Sandayu watched the two from the treetops alongside Catarribera while discussing Masayasu's potential. After Masayasu managed to defeat Hanzō using underhanded tactics, Sandayu broke up the fight. He briefly reprimanded Hanzō for his arrogance and insulting Masayasu's status, before offering the latter the chance to become a shinobi under his guidance. Masayasu accepted and later left the village to commence his training.[1]

Later life

Eventually, Sandayu joined the Assassins, becoming a member of the Kakushiba ikki, the league founded by Catarribera and Tsuyu. Masayasu, by now known as Fujibayashi Nagato, and Hanzō also joined the league,[2] and vowed to continue their predecessors' mission to safeguard the three Imperial Regalia.[3]

In October 1579, Sandayu led the successful defense of Iga from the invading army of Oda Nobukatsu. During the battle, he allowed Fujibayashi Naoe, Nagato and Tsuyu's daughter, to help the other shinobi, despite her father having forbidden her from taking part in the conflict out of fear for her safety. However, Naoe managed to impress both Nagato and Sandayu by single-handedly killing an enemy samurai.[4]

Consequently, Sandayu began training Naoe in the shinobi arts, giving her a grappling hook and assigning her the task of investigating a suspicious lack of response from their base at Kunimiyama Fort. After Naoe discovered that the fort had been taken over by Oda Nobunaga's forces in preparation for a second invasion of Iga, she reported back to Sandayu, who was impressed by the young Igan's talent for espionage and continued to train her.[5]
