Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou was a Japanese rōnin who lived during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1560, Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou and Toza, the leader of a team of shinobi, were commissioned by Jesuit priest and Templar Paulino Massa to travel to Iga and discover the location of the Imperial Regalia.[1] Returning back to his home region, Gonjou-rou, along with Toza, arrived near Momochi Sandayu's training grounds and came upon an Assassin teaching a student how to do a Leap of Faith.[2]

Reconvening atop a hill, Gonrou-jou and Toza planned to attack Sandayu, with the rōnin claiming his chance to take Sandayu's head. Going their separate ways, Gonrou-jou headed to find Sandayu but comes into conflict with his students. While fighting against them, Gonjou-rou managed to chase after one of the students Konan, who was injured but escaped to find help. When Konan came to find Fujibayashi Masayasu, Gonjou-rou found and then challenged Masayasu to a fight. Overpowering the shinobi, he gave chase when Masayasu ran towards the bamboo grove. He tried to find Masayasu but started to swing his ōdachi randomly. When he came across the shine from a kusarigama, he hit his target but noticed that it was just bamboo with the weapon. Instantly, he was struck in the neck with a kunai by Masayasu and then fell to the ground.[3]

While Masayasu was shocked, Gonjou-rou surprised and punched him to the ground. Garnering an advantage and keeping Masayasu down, he took the kunai out and went towards the shinobi. Before Gonjou-rou could strike, Sandayu came from the shadows and sliced off Gonjou-rou's right arm. Dealing with a great loss, Gonjou-rou was almost slain but Toza's shinobi surrounded Sandayu and Masayasu. When they attacked, Gonjou-rou fled into the grove and escaped.[4] Surviving his wound,[1] he saw that Toza and his shinobi had failed.[4] He later informed Massa with a message.[1]

In 1562, Gonjou-rou traveled to Ise and made his way inside the Old Inn of the Fifty Emblems, where he came upon a drunk man trying to entice a young woman. When the man turned to him and insulted him for being armless, he striked the man down and threatened him that any who crossed them, he collected their right arms. Passing the host, he later claimed a room for himself and left the drunk man alive.[5]
