Toza (died 1560) was a Japanese shinobi who lived during the late Sengoku period.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1560, Toza, the leader of a team of shinobi, and the rōnin Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou were contracted by the Jesuit priest and Templar Paulino Massa to travel to Iga and discover the location of the Imperial Regalia.[1] Along with Gonjou-rou, they arrived near Momochi Sandayu's training grounds and came upon an Assassin teaching her student how to do a Leap of Faith.[2]
Atop a hill elsewhere, Toza and Gonrou-jou planned to attack Sandayu, with the rōnin vowing to take Sandayu's head. Going their separate ways, Toza had his team aid Gonjou-rou while he headed to inspect Sandayu's huts. Having heard two shinobi talk in a room, he took his katana and nearly killed Masayasu through the door. Fortunately, Hattori Hanzō pulled him out of the way while Toza walked into the room. Hanzō instructed Masayasu to leave to find Sandayu while he faced Toza alone. Toza asked if he remembered him, to which Hanzō recalled him being a failed student under Sandayu.[3]
Facing off against Hanzō, Toza was beaten and thrown outside, severely injured. Drawing his katana, Hanzō approached the defeated Toza as the latter pleaded for his life. However, Toza was slain quickly by Hanzō, failing in his mission.[4] Afterwards, news of his death, along with his group's demise, reached Massa and his fellow Templar Imagawa Ujizane.[1]
