Yasuke's mother (died 1570s) was an African slave owned by the Portuguese Templar Nuno Caro, and the mother of Diogo.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Death[edit | edit source]

One rainy night on Caro's ship, she picked up Templar documents blown onto the floor with the help of her son. However, when the Templar Duarte de Melo saw them, he called for Caro and then grabbed the documents from her hands. Upon Caro's directive, Diogo and his mother were taken out onto the deck, where de Melo held down Diogo while Caro questioned his mother, asking who had sent them, though she did not respond and began crying.[1]

Despite Diogo's pleas that they did not know anything, Caro shot his mother dead. At that moment, an Assassin revealed himself and fought against the Templars and their guards to give Diogo an opportunity to escape. After grabbing his mother's necklace, Diogo jumped overboard, fleeing from his assailants.[1]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Years later, Diogo became a retainer[2] and then a samurai under Oda Nobunaga. Going by Yasuke,[3] he later allied with kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe[4] after Nobunaga's death,[5] and joined the Kakushiba ikki.[4] During their mission against the Shinbakufu, Yasuke heard Duarte de Melo's name while fighting the pirate Samemaru.[6] Investigating further, Yasuke embarked on his own mission to kill de Melo[7] and Nuno Caro as revenge for his mother's death and to prevent them from exploiting his adoptive homeland. After eliminating de Melo,[8] he tracked down and killed Caro, an act which served as a declaration of war against the Templars.[1]
