Temple of the Horseman
Temple of the Horseman was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Naoe meets with Akechi Mitsuhide to initiate their plan to assassinate Oda Nobunaga.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Naoe traveled south of Kyoto to the small village north of Shōryū-ji Castle, where Mitsuhide, Ise Sadaoki, and his followers were gathering.
- Akechi Mitsuhide: It is time. We must hurry.
Naoe approached the general.
- Akechi Mitsuhide: Everything is prepared. We must strike now.
- Naoe: I am ready.

- Akechi Mitsuhide: We will begin our attack once you are inside the temple. Find Lord Nobunaga quickly and you may finally avenge your father's death.
- Naoe: Oda Nobunaga took everything I loved. He will not escape.
- Akechi Mitsuhide: If we are to succeed, you must not fail. Go!
As the plan went underway, Naoe hid in the cart heading into Honnō-ji at night, aided by her fellow Igan Furuta Tanji.
- Castle Guard: Hold! What is this?
- Furuta Tanji: Rice, for Lord Nobunaga.
- Castle Guard: Papers!
Tanji handed the documents to the guard. After taking a look, the guard handed the papers back to Tanji and prepared to let him through. However, he was stopped by Nobunaga's retainer Yasuke.

- Yasuke: Wait. What is this?
- Naoe: (gasps)
Yasuke went closer to the cart to inspect its contents.
- Yasuke: These sacks are old. Rats might have eaten through them. Make sure the rice is checked!
- Castle Guard: Yes, sir. Move on!
The cart managed to get through and parked near a storehouse. Naoe soon got up and headed to the rooftops. She first inspected her surroundings and the path she needs to go through before setting off.
- Naoe: I need to find Oda Nobunaga. Quickly.

Naoe made use of the surrounding darkness, along with the bushes to pass her way through, avoiding the guards. After a short while, she arrived at the inner courtyard.
- Naoe: I have to hurry and find Nobunaga before Lord Mitsuhide begins his attack.
Naoe reached outside the residences.
- Naoe: Today I avenge you, Father.

She entered the residence. Inside, Nobunaga's closest retainer Mori Ranmaru entered the hiroma where Nobunaga, Yasuke, and the Jesuit Luís Fróis were in.
- Mori Ranmaru: It is Mitsuhide, Lord Nobunaga.
- Oda Nobunaga: That impotent traitor! Yasuke, go to the gate. Hold it as long as you can.
Yasuke obeyed his lord and left.
- Oda Nobunaga: Ran! Take the women and Fróis. Set fires on your way out.
- Mori Ranmaru: Lord Nobunaga! I will not leave you!
- Oda Nobunaga: Go! You have served me better than my sons, Ran. Do not defy me now.
Having no choice, Ranmaru obeyed his lord and bowed. Nobunaga turned to speak to Fróis.
Fróis gave an apologetic bow and soon left with Ranmaru. Now all alone, Nobunaga waited but was soon interrupted by the sound of music. As he looked around, he finally confronted the figure.
- Oda Nobunaga: Who are you?
Naoe revealed herself and pocketed her tsuchibue.
- Naoe: I am Iga.

As the surroundings burst into flame, Nobunaga drew his katana and clashed with Naoe. The kunoichi was able to land hits on the daimyō before she was soon caught off-guard and thrown to the ground.
- Oda Nobunaga: (grunts) You have been taught well.
As Nobunaga threw a slash downwards, Naoe dodged to her left.
- Naoe: Let me show you how well.
The fight continued and reached a point where they were caught in a sword bind.
- Oda Nobunaga: (grunts) If I die, our country will fall. Mitsuhide cannot rule it.
Naoe landed a kick to break up the stalemate.
- Naoe: Where is the box? Tell me!
As the fight persisted, Naoe was able to break Nobunaga's guard, knocking him to the ground.
- Oda Nobunaga: (grunts)
- Naoe: (grunts)
With Nobunaga now defenseless, Naoe prepared to kill him.
- Naoe: (screams)
As Naoe prepared to deal the fatal blow, her attack was blocked by Yasuke. and she was hit back.
- Naoe: Ahh!

Naoe retreated a few steps away.
- Naoe: I will kill you.
- Yasuke: You will try.
- Naoe: (screams)
Naoe attacked Yasuke and managed to land a cut on his right shoulder.
- Yasuke: (screams)
Naoe continued to attack the samurai.
- Naoe: (screams)
- Yasuke: (grunts)

Yasuke disarmed Naoe and pinned her by the neck against the wall. Naoe drew her Hidden Blade as her last weapon.
- Naoe: (grunts)
Naoe drew her blade against Yasuke, who caught her hand and looked at her wrist.
- Yasuke: The blade... it is you.
- Oda Nobunaga: Kill her. Now!
- Yasuke: (breathes)
- Naoe: (grunts)
After some hesitation, Yasuke refused and release Naoe.
- Yasuke: I cannot.

He then picked up his katana while Naoe drew her sword against Nobunaga.
- Naoe: You took the box. You and the Shinbakufu. Give it to me.
- Oda Nobunaga: I know nothing of what you are saying.
- Naoe: You were there! You gave the order to kill my father.
- Oda Nobunaga: Whatever Mitsuhide told you, he has lied, He has betrayed me. He has deceived us all.
- Naoe: No! You are the liar. You killed my family.
- Oda Nobunaga: (breathes)

Nobunaga got up and approached Naoe, while stopping Yasuke from drawing his sword.
- Oda Nobunaga: I have killed many people. I did it to make us strong—one shining sword under heaven, with a single destiny. Not for the Shinbakufu, for the country.
- Naoe: You slaughtered innocents!
- Oda Nobunaga: Such a blade cannot be forged without fire. I did what had to be done. Clans squabble like children. Wait for a chance to conquer us. I did it to unite us. There was no other way. But it does not matter now. I am trapped. I cannot rule after such a failure. (laughs) Mitsuhide thinks he will rule, but the others will not follow.
Nobunaga got on his knees.

- Oda Nobunaga: The fight for our country must continue. It is up to others now.
Having listened to Nobunaga's words, Naoe was convinced to put away her sword and abandon her mission, leaving the residence. Meanwhile, Yasuke watched as his lord took out a dagger, placed it on the ground, and removed his outer robe.
- Yasuke: My lord, no.
Outside, Naoe was able to escape the temple complex.
- Oda Nobunaga: He must not get my head. You understand?
- Yasuke: Please...
- Oda Nobunaga: Yasuke. It is over. I am lost.
- Yasuke: You saved me. I will never forget you, my friend.
- Oda Nobunaga: Do not thank me, only honor me. I have brought my death upon my own head.
Nobunaga reached for the dagger while Yasuke got up and stood behind his lord.
- Oda Nobunaga: (breathes)

In the process of committing seppuku, Nobunaga recited a line from the Noh play Atsumori as his final words.
- Oda Nobunaga: (gurgles) Is there anything at all that, once given life, does not perish?—
Yasuke then fulfilled his lord's final wish by cutting off his head.
- Yasuke: (screams)
Outside the residence, Mitsuhide arrived with his men, witnessing the sight of the burning house.
- Akechi Mitsuhide: The head is unsalvageable. Even in death he mocks me.
Having disposed of his lord's remains, Yasuke came out escorted by Mitsuhide's soldiers. The samurai stared into the traitorous general's face. Just then, the Jesuit Luís Fróis was also brought forward.

- Akechi Mitsuhide: The black soldier is not one of us. Take him, priest. Send him back to... wherever he belongs.
Mitsuhide then left with the rest of his men, leaving Yasuke and Fróis alone.
- Yasuke: You know that I am not going anywhere.
- Luis Frois: I know. Vai com Deus, (Go with God), my friend. Till we meet again.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Naoe failed to assassinate Nobunaga due to Yasuke's intervention. Convinced that Mitsuhide had lied to her about Nobunaga having ordered her father's death, Naoe left the temple, while Nobunaga committed seppuku with aid from Yasuke to prevent Mitsuhide from obtaining his head.
