Yasuke:We have met the man behind the insurrection. A rōnin named Koshiro. He's since returned to Miki Castle.
Tadashige:And he will keep the conscripts from defending the Ox?
Yasuke:Some. As many as possible. But there are plenty who are convinced of the Ox's cause.
Naoe:Hiromichi has agreed to help. He will smuggle me into Miki Castle undetected.
The three looked at the Ox's plan for the castle.
Naoe:I'll cover the high ground. Take down the gunmen watching the front gate and the area where the deserters are held.
Yasuke:Then I will face down the Ox. Defeat him in front of his followers.
Tadashige:Knowing him, it is a duel he will not refuse. You will likely need to face the Tsuno as well.
Yasuke:The Ox's champion. If I kill the Ox, will the Tsuno relent?
Tadashige:I sheltered the monks who suffered at Tanjosan. Gave them food. Water. It was not enough. The silence that hung between their grateful smiles. It spoke loudly of the one thing I could not give them.
Yasuke:Justice.
Tadashige:I wonder about the Tsuno. What he saw that made him the Ox's willing instrument. The Ox must die. But killing the Tsuno... is that justice?
Yasuke:The justice the Tsuno wants is not justice. It cannot build. It can only tear down. Even if he succeeds, he will never get what he wants.
Tadashige: (sighs) Forgive me. The Tsuno's words at Tanjosan still ring clear in my ears.
Yasuke:He accused you of letting down that boy and his grandmother.
Tadashige:He spoke the truth. I no longer know what I am fighting for.
Naoe:I think you do, sir. You will recognize it when we win.
Tadashige nodded in agreement with Naoe's words, and the trio all stood up.
Tadashige:So many who need saving. But no matter. Send them to Kyokaiji. Send Koshiro and his compatriots.
Tadashige took his leave. Naoe and Yasuke followed as well and took a glimpse at the nearby castle.
Yasuke:You are ready, Naoe?
Naoe:It is time for Hiromichi to make good on his promise. See you on the inside?
Yasuke:We will meet soon. Be careful.
The two then parted ways to head to their respective missions. Some time later, Naoe was smuggled inside the castle outskirts. After eliminating two guards, Naoe approached the nearby scaffolding.
Naoe:I can climb up from here. Get a better view of the ground level.
Naoe climbed up the scaffolding and entered the complex through a torn down fence.
Naoe:If our information was good, there will be gunmen. Many of them.
Just as she expected, she found quite a number of gunmen present.
Naoe:This area is under the gunmen's control. I'll need to get rid of them. Quickly.
Naoe went about taking down the gunmen along with the guards in the area and on the watch towers. With her mission done, Naoe went up a platform and watched as Yasuke approached an injured ashigaru conscript.
Yasuke:Koshiro is expecting me. Keep us alive?
Naoe:Focus on keeping yourself alive and I'll handle the rest. See you inside, Yasuke.
The two parted ways. Yasuke headed to the entrance to Miki Castle and found Koshiro waiting there.
Koshiro:Yasuke? You are right on time.
Yasuke:Will the conscripts put up a fight?
Koshiro:They surely will, but not against you. Shall we?
Yasuke and Koshiro entered the castle grounds, aiding the rebels in killing the Ox's men.
Yasuke:That is all of them. Now for the Ox.
Yasuke, Koshiro and the rebels enter deeper into the castle.
Koshiro:Please. Let me help you kill that bastard.
Yasuke:Your brothers here need you more than I do, Koshiro. Help them first.
Koshiro:I will meet you and Naoe once you have located the deserters.
Yasuke parted ways with Koshiro's group and entered the inner complex, eliminating the guards inside. As he reached the training grounds, he found an injured soldier nearby.
Yasuke:One of the Ox's soldiers. Injured. When?
Yasuke approached him.
Yasuke:Can you move? We will get you out of here.
Dying Ashigaru:It is... you. I won't let you hurt me again. Help! Somebody! The enemy is – (gurgles)
As the soldier died from his wounds, Yasuke turned around and found Naoe observing from the platform. The two watched as the Ox revealed himself as Bessho Harumasa, who was joined by the Tsuno and a number of guards in confronting Yasuke.
Harumasa:So. The rumours are true! Yasuke. You cut down lives in the name of that hypocrite Oda Nobunaga. He deceived you, my friend. To the masters of the land, a koku of rice is worth more than a peasant's life.
Yasuke:More lives thrown away. For a cause built on impossible promises, a cause built on bloodshed. The Bessho lords gave up their lives to end the bloodshed. You tarnish their name.
Harumasa:A lapdog of Nobunaga has nothing to offer in the name of peace. Have you come here to continue your lord's campaign of cruelty?
Yasuke:I am simply here to claim your head, Bessho Harumasa. To show your men the hollowness of your words.
Harumasa:A challenge. I accept! Convinction guides my blade, Yasuke. What guides yours?
Yasuke:Conviction, perhaps. But shared conviction. Not my own ideals.
Harumasa:Then you are a worthy foe. We are the same.
At that moment, Harumasa's right hand, the Tsuno, stepped forward.
The Tsuno:Conviction guides your sword, my lord. And I am that sword.
Harumasa:You want to fight me, samurai? Very well. Tsuno is the sword with which I will strike you down. I fight through you now, Tsuno. I will await news of your victory at the tenshu.
Harumasa took his leave, leaving Yasuke to face the Tsuno and the guards.
Yasuke:So be it.
Naoe:Not what we expected, but not surprising.
Yasuke:We must go on.
Naoe:I'm going for the deserters now. Yasuke can take care of himself.
Naoe left the area, leaving Yasuke to deal with the Tsuno. She reached a residence area, eavedropping on the guards there.
Ashigaru Archer:The Ox never backs down from a fight. He must have a good reason to trust the Tsuno.
Ashigaru Spearman:There is no greater honor than to claim victory in the Ox's name.
Naoe:I need to take care of the guards before I can rescue Koshiro's men.
Naoe dispatched the guards and entered the residence, find a group of deserters inside.
Naoe:These are the deserters. I have to be quiet.
Naoe spoke to one of them.
Naoe:I'm getting you out of here.
Man:Now? Does the Ox know?
Naoe:He won't as long as you follow my lead.
Man:There are others here. We chose to rebel. They didn't.
Naoe:Worry about you and your friends for now. Wait inside. I'll let you know when it's safe.
Naoe left the residence to rejoin Yasuke, discovering that he was victorious in his fight and watched as he approached the dying Tsuno on the ground.
Naoe:Yasuke, I'm counting on you. I'll be bringing some deserters to greet you.
Naoe left the area, leaving Yasuke to deal with the Tsuno. Yasuke drew his weapon and attacked the enemy soldiers.
The Tsuno:Face me!
Yasuke:You do not need to prove anything to him. Walk away, Tsuno. Think of your loved ones.
The Tsuno:I am, sir! That is why I cannot walk away. We fight for our home! Surely you can see that.
Yasuke:You fight for an idea of home. Not for the people in it.
Yasuke killed the guards and mortally wounded the Tsuno. As he laid dying, Yasuke approached him.
The Tsuno: (grunts) My grandmother... She will worry. Please tell her.
Yasuke:How do I find her? What is your name?
The Tsuno:Hideyoshi killed so many of us. I couldn't do anything. Just a boy.
The Tsuno raised him right hand up, as if he was reaching out to the sky.
The Tsuno:Obaachan. (Grandmother.) Goodbye. I... I hope you understand. (groans)
As the Tsuno died from his wounds, Naoe came to join Yasuke.
Naoe:Yasuke.
Koshiro joined them shortly after, as did the deserters Naoe had found.
Koshiro:That's everyone. Just like you said. Miss Naoe, it was an honor. Is there someone who could look after these people?
Yasuke:Nakamura Tadashige. One of us will take you to him. The other will deal with the Ox.
Naoe:Go with Koshiro. I'll finish this.
Yasuke:I will find you when you are done.
Yasuke left the castle with Koshiro and the deserters. Naoe then navigated her way through the castle grounds to reach the tenshu, using stealth to her advantage. Reaching the tenshu, she overheard the Ox talking to his men.
Harumasa:My dear warriors. Do not despair. So long as you hold firm to your weapon, there can be no defeat! In this life or the next, our conviction will bring us back together. I will find all of you. That is my promise. Our enemy stalks us from the shadows to strike us in the back. We only strike once we see the crippling fear in our enemy's eyes!
Naoe got close to Harumasa and attacked him and his guards.
Harumasa:If you knew what you jeopardize by coming here, you would kneel and let me plunge my blade in your neck. The Tsuno's blood is on your hands. You think you are different, but you're wrong. You and Hideyoshi are cut from the same cloth.
Naoe killed the guards and defeated Harumasa, who was now left kneeling on the floor. Yasuke arrived moments later and joined Naoe.
Naoe:Those men. Are they safe?
Yasuke nodded.
Yasuke:I only killed the Tsuno to get to my true target. The Ox is next.
Naoe:Tadashige is expecting us. Come. I'll join you when they're safe.
Naoe and Koshiro left the castle with the deserters. Meanwhile, Yasuke fought his way through the castle grounds to reach the tenshu, where Harumasa was waiting. The Ox and his men attacked Yasuke.
Harumasa:You would kill justice itself? Murder the spirit of conviction? If you knew what you jeopardize by coming here, you would kneel and let me plunge my blade in your neck. The Tsuno's blood is on your hands. You think you are different, but you're wrong. You and Hideyoshi are cut from the same cloth.
Yasuke killed the guards and defeated Harumasa, who was now left kneeling on the floor.
Harumasa: (breathes)
Naoe joined shortly after she had finished her job.
Naoe:We've taken the deserters somewhere safe.
Harumasa:"Safe." They return to a life without dignity.
Naoe:Tell us about the box. Your leader. I want to know everything.
Harumasa:You cut down my men. Invade your home. To inquire about a box? I never cared about the Tatsu's ambitions. He could not help Harima.
Harumasa:The Tatsu gave me power and in exchange, I gave him my word. The first time I ever set foot outside of Harima.
Naoe:Nothing? There's nothing you can tell us?
Harumasa gave no reply, causing an angered Naoe to walk away. Yasuke addressed Harumasa alone.
Yasuke:The Tsuno. Who was he?
Harumasa:The massacre at Tanjosan was his first death. Now, he dies as the Tsuno. That is all that matters. I will see him soon. What of those that remain? What can you offer them that I could not?
As Yasuke kept quiet, Naoe, who had overheard Harumasa's question, returned to answer it.
Naoe:Freedom. We have given them the freedom, to choose their own paths.
Harumasa:In a time of war, freedom is the coward's way. Those who once chose freedom... They are all dead now.
Naoe:Enough.
Naoe signaled for Yasuke to end the Ox's life. Yasuke walked behind Harumasa.
Bessho Harumasa:A life in wartime. A fitting end. Thank you, Yasuke.
Yasuke:He offered wayward men a way forward. For many, that was enough.
Naoe:No. Harumasa was just a man. A man who exploited the suffering of this land. Circumstances drove the Tsuno to join the Ox. And there will be more like that young monk.
Yasuke:The Tsuno wished to prove he was not an idle victim of circumstance. He got what he wanted. That young monk was lost to war long ago. Before our mission. Before he placed his faith in the Ox.
Naoe:Faith is ananban(foreigner's) concept, Yasuke. It has no place in a time of war.
Yasuke:Faith is feeling with the soul over the mind. There was no logic to the Ox's vision, but the Tsuno believed in it. He had to. Is that so different from why I fight? I search my soul for an answer, but I cannot say.
Naoe:Then I will say it. The Ox used words like "justice" to control others. You don't. You're different.
Yasuke:How do you know?
Naoe:You don't speak of justice, you embody it. You seek to free people, not mold them to your vision of the world. I know your vision, because we share it.
