Niwa Toshikazu (丹羽利一) was a Japanese port official in Obama during the late 16th century. A member of the Niwa clan, Toshikazu was a second cousin to Niwa Nagahide's adopted brother and oversaw the influx of trade and goods into the city and the province of Wakasa.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1582, a rise in attacks and raids by pirates greatly disrupted the flow of trade into the province: merchants were afraid to trade as they were robbed as soon as they set sail from the port, and fishermen were unable to fish due to these attacks.[1] Around late June, Toshikazu met with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and samurai Yasuke,[1] who came to Obama to meet with Nagahide.[2] Toshikazu requested their aid to deal with the pirates such that trading operations can resume and goods be able to flow in again.[1]

After tracking down and defeating one hundred pirates, Naoe and Yasuke met with Toshikazu again. He thanked them for their efforts and gifted them gold and mon for their reward.[1]
