Akechi Mitsuhide (明智 光秀; 10 March 1528 – 2 July 1582) was a general under the daimyō Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period of Japan.[1] In June 1582, Mitsuhide rebelled against his master and attacked him at Honnō-ji temple.[2]
Secretly, Mitsuhide's rebellion came as a result of his affiliation with the Shinbakufu, a group that sought to overthrow Nobunaga and restore the Ashikaga shogunate. Mitsuhide served the group under the alias The Two-Faced,[3] while his daughter Hosokawa Tama was forced to serve the Templars, the Shinbakufu's main benefactors.[4] Though through the actions of the Kakushiba ikki, consisting of the kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe whom Akechi had manipulated into attacking Nobunaga, and Nobunaga's former samurai Yasuke, the Shinbakufu was dismantled and the Templars influence diminished.[5][6]
