Palatinus (plural: palatini) was a rank within the Order of the Ancients' hierarchy whose members were drawn from judges, merchants, and soldiers. Alongside their fellow rank, Preost, the Palatini held many spots within every branch, excluding the Wardens of Relics. In the other four branches, the Palatini directly followed their Maegester.[1]

In the 870s, every Palatinus in England was tracked down and assassinated by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, who recovered their medallions and presented them to her Hidden One ally, Hytham.[1] From the Order's hierarchy system during this time, the rank of Palatinus seems to have had an equivalent footing to the rank of Preost.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

A "Palatinus" was a high-ranking official of, at times, varying positions within the Roman Empire and its descendants. The derived term "paladin" referred to the Twelve Peers of Charlemagne's Frankish court but has now come to mean any exceptionally devout knight championing a righteous cause.[2] Notably, both the Roman and Frankish Empires were ruled by Order of the Ancients leaders.
