The Bessho clan (別所氏, Bessho-shi) was a Japanese samurai family that held power in the Harima Province during the Sengoku period.

History[edit | edit source]

Siege of Miki[edit | edit source]

In 1578, despite being an ally to Oda Nobunaga, clan leader Bessho Nagaharu assisted the Mōri clan after Hashiba Hideyoshi attacked them. With this betrayal, Nagaharu opposed Hideyoshi by shutting himself and his forces within Miki Castle. Despite Hideyoshi's continuous siege, Nagaharu was able to resist Hideyoshi. However, after two years and a loss of provisions, he offered his life, his wife's and brother's in exchange for his men. In the end, Nagaharu, his wife, and younger brother committed suicide[1][2] while Hideyoshi brought his head to Nobunaga as proof of his victory.[3]

Second revolt[edit | edit source]

Angered by the fall of the clan, former retainer Bessho Harumasa vowed vengeance against Nobunaga and Hideyoshi.[4] His cause was later aided by the secret collective, the Shinbakufu, which he joined and who provided resources for his rebellion.[5]

In 1582, after Nobunaga committed suicide when Honnō-ji was attacked by one of his trusted general, Akechi Mitsuhide,[6] Harumasa led a second revolt and ousted the Oda forces out of Miki Castle,[7] along with his second-in-command, The Tsuno.[8] Needing more reinforcements, Harumasa abducted former monks and former retainer Nakamura Tadashige and took them to Tanjosan Myoyoji Temple, a place in ruins by the Oda clan. Harumasa later gave the monks an ultimatum: join his cause or die as the enemy. Giving them time to think, he left with The Tsuno while they were kept hostage at the temple.[7]

However, Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke witnessed their capture and later rescued the monks and Tadashige, whom they discussed with about ending Harumasa's plans.[7] After finding a way to sneak Naoe inside[9] and recruiting a rōnin and former Bessho retainer Koshiro,[10] the pair executed their assault on Miki Castle. While Naoe took care of the gunmen and secured Koshiro access to find his fellow conscripts, Yasuke confronted Harumasa and challenged him to a duel.[5]

While Harumasa nearly agreed, The Tsuno offered to be his champion. Harumasa later left to wait at the tenshu while Yasuke fought with The Tsuno. However, The Tsuno lost and fell to Yasuke, who later joined Naoe to confront Harumasa. The Bessho leader was soon defeated and then interrogated on the location of the box. However, Harumasa admitted his true intentions and only fought for the Shinbakufu in exchange for the support for his cause. Fed up with Harumasa's answers, Naoe signaled to Yasuke, who slew Harumasa down, ending his revolt.[5]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Following Harumasa's death, one of his generals Genzaburo ordered his remaining unit to find and to kill Koshiro for betraying the Bessho clan. The unit soon attacked Koshiro at Kyokaiji Temple but failed to kill him. While his unit separated, Genzaburo still tasked them with other missions for them to do. When Naoe arrived at the temple and saw Koshiro wounded, she promised to help and hunt down his attackers. After discovering and killing all of them, she later tracked down Genzaburo's location at Zuiganji Temple. When Naoe met the old general, Genzaburo explained his choices were in honor of his fallen leader Harumasa before engaging her in a duel. Ultimately, she killed the general, ending the threat against Koshiro.[11]
