Akane (died 1582), also known as The Poisoner, was a Japanese kunoichi who was secretly a part of former Bessho clan Commander Genzaburo's unit.

Biography

In 1582, after Bessho Harumasa's death and learning of Koshiro's involvement,[1] former Bessho clan commander Genzaburo ordered Akane and her allies to kill Koshiro at Kyokaiji Temple. When they failed to kill him, they soon split apart and awaited their next orders. Yet, Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe met with Koshiro after their failed attempt and promised to hunt them down.[2]

Akane later followed her next directive to kill a target in Osaka. However, she was unaware of herself being targeted by Genzaburo, who wanted to cut loose ends. Naoe later tracked her down to her performance within the Osaka Castle's grounds at Nishinomaru Garden. Inside, Akane was performing her biwa set for a crowd until Naoe confronted and assassinated her. Naoe then retrieved an unsent letter, which pleaded Genzaburo to kill Koshiro herself, and the bow The Poisoner's Message from Akane's personal effects.[2]
