Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣 秀吉; 1537 – 1598), also known as Hashiba Hideyoshi (羽柴 秀吉), was a daimyō during the Sengoku period of Japan, and the second of Japan's three great unifiers (三英傑).[1]

Originally a general serving under Oda Nobunaga, following his lord's death in 1582,[2][3] Hideyoshi managed to unify Japan under his rule, only to be killed by the Japanese Assassin Yamauchi Taka,[4] paving the way for Tokugawa Ieyasu's ascension to shōgun of Japan. After Hideyoshi's death, the land was divided between forces loyal to the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa forces. At the Battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu defeated the Toyotomi forces under Ishida Mitsunari and inherited Hideyoshi's legacy.[1]
