"I am the Yamana Kihei, yes. Proud purveyor of Kyoto's finest umbrellas. All of our city's most fashionable have them!"

Yamana Kihei

Yamana Kihei was a Japanese umbrella merchant who operated in Kyoto, Yamashiro, during the 16th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

As one of Kyoto's principal umbrella purveyors, Kihei claimed to have sold umbrellas to the city's most fashionable residents. In 1582, Kihei's business was affected when Takahashi Saburo of the Takahashi clan repeatedly knocked his cart over, forcing him to relocate west of Nijo Palace. There, he began hearing stories regarding Saburo's family being put through cruel training and suffering. Wishing for someone to deal with the problem, Kihei shared his woe with Ujimasa, a monk based at the Kiyomizudera Temple in the eastern part of Kyoto.[1]

Ujimasa eventually enlisted the help of the kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe and the samurai Yasuke to deal with Saburo and his trouble-making family. Meeting the pair, Kihei told Naoe and Yasuke what he knew about the Takahasi clan and suggested that they start solving the issue by confronting the family's guard.[1]
