The Valley Yamabushi (died 1582) was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he pretended to be a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

After the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga created a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi, who were tasked to eliminate any remaining Igan soldiers. However, these soldiers became more callous and devious over time, killing any innocents in their way.[1]

In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku met and spoke with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these false monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by tracking and hunting down the perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead, Naoe investigated a cabin near Hinotani Shrine in Iga, where there were rumors of trouble nearby.[1]

Arriving at the cabin, Naoe confronted the imposter and assassinated him. She then retrieved the kanabō Mountain Bearer from his personal effects.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The Valley Yamabushi may be killed by Naoe while securing a new home for Matsu and saving the cabin's residents during the memory "The Monk's Wake."
