Matsu's Camp

Matsu's Camp was a cabin in the southern Nabari Wilds in Iga Province, Japan.
History[edit | edit source]
In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki member and shinobi Fujibayashi Naoe traveled to the cabin after finding her "auntie" Matsu again and offering to clear a safe path for her. Arriving there, she found a yamabushi threatening an elderly man and his granddaughter near the premise. Realizing it was a fraudulent imposter, Naoe confronted the criminal and ultimately killed him.[1][2] She later talked with the elderly man, Yoshiharu, who stated that his granddaughter Murasaki was injured and needed medical attention.[1]
After conferring with Matsu at the Hinotani Shrine, Naoe left to find maggots to treat Murasaki's wounds while Matsu made her way to the cabin. Upon arrival, she met with Yoshiharu and Muraski and started to cook misoharu for them. However, Muraski had faked her injuries in order for her and Yoshiharu to stop moving. When Naoe arrived, Matsu told her the truth, much to her surprise.[3]
While Matsu tended to the food, Naoe spoke with Yoshiharu, reflecting on their losses during the Tenshō Iga War. When Yoshiharu mentioned lanterns that he and his late wife had kept at their old residence, Naoe left to recover them while Yoshiharu kept Matsu company. Following Naoe's return, Yoshiharu placed the lanterns around the cabin as Matsu readied the food.[4]
During the meal, Muraski stood up and expressed her desire to stay, as this was the first time she had seen her grandfather happy in months. Yoshiharu was hesitant, but after further convincing from Naoe and Matsu, he relented and agreed to stay for at least one season. Naoe then suggested that Matsu could train Murasaki as a shinobi while she and Yoshiharu helped Matsu around her new home. Matsu emotionally thanked Naoe for her help, to which the latter stated that family takes care of each other.[4]
