Asari Nobutane was a Japanese samurai who served as a retainer and one of the Akazonae under the Takeda clan. Having trained under Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, Asari Nobutane served under Takeda Shingen, until Takeda Shingen's death from Oda Nobunaga's forces.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Under Nobutsuna's tutelage[edit | edit source]

In 1573, Nobutane was trained under Kamiizumi Nobutsuna at Minowa Castle under Takeda's request. Initially having met as opponents, Nobutsuna fiercely taught Nobutane, who became an Akazonae general, one of Takeda's military elite, under Shingen. However, Nobutsuna soon left after accepting a call to aid and teach Oda Nobunaga's warriors.[1]

When Nobunaga attacked the Takeda clan, his use of the teppō proved to be potent when many of Takeda's men fell to it, except Nobutane. After Takeda Shingen's death, Nobutane began to master the teppō, the very weapon that killed his fellow warriors. He later chose his own way to wander and to answer any challenger who came to face him.[1]

Life as a rōnin[edit | edit source]

By 1582, Nobutane's reputation grew as a master teppō wielder and soon found himself camped in the bamboo grove in the southern part of Negoro-ji, Kii. One day, after he easily defeated a challenger, he was approached by fellow Nobutsuna student and Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke, who came to learn his teachings of the teppō. Accepting the duel, Nobutane gave some words of wisdom before they dueled with their teppōs. Nobutane was then bested by Yasuke, whom he told about how choosing one's own path is all they have. Before parting, he gifted the teppō, Dark Burst, to Yasuke and asked him to give their sensei his regards.[1]
